Ten Critical Success Factors

By Wadzanai Nenzou

Success can be defined as many different things. To some success is having a lot of money and financial security. To others success is educating their children and making provision for their families, and yet to others success is simply the achievement of one’s dreams. Whatever the case, all human beings are always in pursuit of a measure of success. To achieve success in any way or form, there are some qualities that are critical and must be looked into.
One of the most important success factors is time management. Time is said to be the most expensive resource in the world since it is fixed and there is no way of going back in time. It is ever moving forward. Having a good time management technique will ensure that you are able to make effective use of your time and through this you will be able to achieve more with your life.

Another critical factor to success is self-discipline. This is often a great hindrance to the success of many people. This is especially the case for people in start-up businesses since so much is required of them at the onset. Self-discipline often involves doing required tasks even when you do not feel like it. Self-discipline will carry you through the rough patches in your life’s journey and will help you achieve your goals.

Being hardworking is another critical success factor. This involves going the extra mile to deliver on your targets. For hardworking individuals, success seems to follow them in all performance related issues in their lives, such as school, work, sports etc. Developing a hardworking mindset conditions you for success. Since you will have achieved different levels of success in the past, the future will become a much more familiar playground.

In order to achieve a measure of success in whatever undertaking, it is important to be goal oriented. It is important to set up goals or targets that you look to achieve within a given time frame. These goals have to be measurable, realistic, and attainable and be of a time sensitive nature. Setting of goals gives you something to work towards and often acts as a benchmark to measure how well or badly you are doing.

When it comes down to it, success is sometimes greatly influenced by one’s attitude. Your attitude greatly defines the kind of outlook you will have on a task or problem. People who have a great attitude, even in the midst of a difficult situation, always seem to rise above it. You attitude is your mindset
and if your mind can be committed to do something, it will deliver, despite the challenges encountered.

Another key critical success factor is that of perseverance. This might seem overrated, but most of the financially successful people in the world today all started with very small businesses. They had big ideas but were limited by their financial situations and sometimes the lack of market. The likes of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi also persevered through a great deal of suffering in order to achieve their goals. Perseverance is therefore critical in carrying you through the rough times and ensures you are faithful enough to see the results.

People have often said the difference between winners and losers is desire. This desire is driven by passion. Having a passion for what you are doing is very important. Often people have started small businesses that did not even break even in the first 2 or 3 years. At this point, they become a labor of love. However, due to the passion associated with the work they do, they are willing to carry on with the business, hoping that things will get better in the mid-term to long-term; and they often do. Passion will help you find a way to do what you want to do and make the necessary sacrifices required to succeed.

Another very critical factor of success is networking. In business, this is widely considered one of the key pillars of success. Networking is about knowing people in every aspect of the society that you can get in touch with. It involves simply building contacts that you can call on at any time to refer or ask for business. Networking is the key in the growth of a company and can help you achieve your goals faster and with less effort.

Planning is one of the most essential factors for success. Planning involves laying down a work plan of the things you want to achieve and working through the strategies and modalities of its execution. It is said that failing to plan is planning to fail. This is very true and is likely the reason for the closure of 2/3 of all businesses in their first 5 years of operation. Planning eliminates surprises and allows you to forecast the direction that you want your life to take.

Finally, it is important to keep yourself in good health. This may involve going to the gym or getting into a dietary program. Keeping your body healthy and prioritizing your health is critical to your success. Remember, a healthy body, healthy mind.

I wish you all the success in the world.

A Key to Success

By Emma Wortt

‘Success is often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.’ – Coco Chanel.

How’s your internal negative voice today? You know the one. The one that tells you things like ‘that’ll never work’, ‘that’s a stupid idea’, ‘who on Earth would want to buy this stuff from you?’, ‘you really think you can run your own business—who are you kidding?’, ‘there are so many other businesses like yours out there, being run by better people with more experience and knowledge—you haven’t got a chance’, ‘that’s a ridiculous goal, it’s too big—you’ve got no hope of ever reaching it.’

The good news is it’s not just you, most of us have got those voices. And what do we do about it? Unfortunately we tend to listen, and even worse—believe them!

The great news is that you can do something about it! Think of a project you’ve been mulling over. You think it’s a great idea and could be a fantastic success but you’ve been holding back on it.

What’s stopping you? Is that that voice inside your head telling you that failure is inevitable?

There are some powerful questions you can ask yourself which will help you to silence that voice.

Make sure you can remain undisturbed for a few minutes so that you can truly let your mind concentrate and open up to new thoughts. You may find a pen and paper useful to jot down any ideas that come to you. Then ask yourself the following questions. Really take your time in answering them, ensure you explore every possibility.

- What’s stopping me from moving forward with this idea/project?

- If there were no obstacles in the way, what would I do?

- If the voice is wrong, what would that mean? What effect would that have?

- What evidence do I have, based on past occurrences, that the voice could be wrong about this?

- The part of me that this voice represents is trying to protect me. And I thank it for that. How would that part of me react if I, having taken everything into consideration, gave this project a go?

- Does that part of me agree that it’s worth trying?

- If I knew I could not fail, what would I do?

When we try something new it is often the case that it doesn’t work perfectly first time. The people to whom Coco Chanel was referring either don’t have that negative internal voice telling them it won’t work or, more likely, they have learnt to control it. The result is that they go ahead. And if it doesn’t quite work they still don’t listen to the voice. What they do instead is make some changes and try again. Making changes is essential. After all ‘if you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.’ And if it still doesn’t quite work, they make some more changes and try again. And so on until, inevitably, they succeed.

Business Speakers Boost Profits In Economic Downturn

By Mark Woodcock

Businesses need to be innovative in order to succeed in times of economic distress, when consumers are more particular about what they buy, and high quality is no longer separate from value for money. Company leaders are looking for ways in which their organisations can be innovative to beat their competition, maintain a healthy income and make their staff feel as valued as possible. This is why business speakers are so high in demand, because they have the skills, knowledge and experience to influence employees at every level. The benefits of business innovation in periods of economic struggle last into times of recovery and so their long term impact should be considered as well. If innovative strategies can save you money in the short term but allow your company to grow later, you have a win-win situation.

There are several ways in which businesses can develop their practices. From changing your manufacturing, distribution, service or strategy you may find ways to do these things at a lower cost, which will be transferable when your business starts to grow again. Innovation has several knock on effects, from increasing your productivity and profitability, to forming new business relationships and reaching new consumers. All of these factors will outlast periods of economic hardship.

Business speakers can help your company in so many ways, all of which impact on each other. From team building to leadership exercises, customer services help and communication, business speakers make the employees of you organisation more open about new ideas and help them to take notice of customer suggestions. If your employees know how to listen to the market, you will end up delivering services or products that people will want to buy because they have a use for them. The perfect example is the mobile device industry. Smaller and smaller gadgets are able to do the function that four or five separate appliances had to do five years ago.

The format that you introduce your team to a business speaker is important to what you want to get out of the occasion. Brainstorming days and events help with team work and communication skills as employees are encouraged to be open with their suggestions for innovation. In-house workshops and lectures really cement company loyalty and make employees feel as though they are part of the business instead of just working for a bunch of managers. These can drive towards working processes such as suggestion boxes around the workplace, regular sessions where departments come together to listen to innovative ideas and incentives for when these implemented ideas are successful.

Success stories always affect us because of their inspirational content. Business speakers who have proved their worth in a similar industry or situation will more likely than not inspire employees from management to labour level that they are all part of your organisation’s family, and you will get more productivity and business innovation as a result.

Don’t Believe Everything You Think – How To Change Misguided Thoughts

Right now, in this moment, you have everything you think you deserve. You are living the life you believe you are worthy of. Your life experience mirrors your internal self-esteem. If you have an unhealthy low self-esteem you will never enjoy the life you dream of. Even if you achieve success in the accomplishment of a desired goal you will self-sabotage until you are back at a level, a comfort zone, that reflects how you feel about yourself. If you have a healthy high self-esteem you will allow yourself to achieve and enjoy what you want and know you deserve. Even if you experience a dramatic financial loss or traumatic experience you will rebound. You will again create wealth and create newer and better experiences. It’s as simple as that.

Know this: The mere fact that you are here on this Earth indicates that you are worthy whether you believe it or not. Each and every person is blessed with a unique talent, a passionate purpose, and the wisdom to express their full potential. This is your birthright. Wherever you are disconnected with who you are at your deepest core is where you will struggle. Wherever you are out of alignment with your truth and what your heart calls forth for you to become is where you will find dissatisfaction, frustration, and desperation.

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” – Henry David Thoreau

All you have to do is spend some time at the check-out lane in your local grocery story and read the headlines on the displayed tabloid magazines to see examples of celebrities who seemingly “have it all” throw it away in a self-destructive act. You shake your head in amused amazement and wonder “What was he thinking?!”

Chances are the inner thoughts of a person who crashes and burns irrationally are something like:

“I don’t deserve all the good stuff that I am experiencing.” “It’s only a matter of time before ‘they’ find out I’m not good/talented/smart enough to have what I have or do what I do.” “This (good stuff) won’t last.”

We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein

Self-destructive behavior doesn’t have to be done on a big scale to be damaging. You self-sabotage when you say NO to who you are, No to what you want to have and do. You toss your opportunities away when you resist what will bring you closer to your aspirations. You limit yourself when you find excuses and reasons (F.E.A.R.) why you ‘can’t’ what you ‘want’.

If you’re a person who realizes that you have had a roller-coaster pattern of self-sabotage you are being run by what I call your own internal Inner Critic who reminds you day in and day out of what you can and cannot do, do and do not deserve. Know, too, that this Inner Critic – the voice of your self-doubt and fear – means well but is woefully misguided. The job of the egoic Inner Critic is to keep you safe, and what will keep you safe is to stay right where you are. You may not like your current circumstance but if it’s what you know, it is safe – and comfortable.

If you’re a person who can’t seem to get out of your own way realize that you are holding yourself back, keeping yourself safe. You’ve bought into the fear and self-doubt served up by your Inner Critic and your unsupportive thoughts and actions are merely attempts to justify your purchase. You’ve invested heavily in time and effort in these erroneous thought patterns and you’re not willing to toss them out into the garbage bin where they belong. You’re not going to buy into a newer, better, belief system.

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford

The first step in getting and keeping more of the good experiences and less of the bad is to be willing to not believe everything you think. Stop the insanity by examining your experiences and questioning the thoughts behind the errant behavior pattern. If you fall on your butt take a look at how you slipped up. What were you thinking? If the thoughts behind the actions that ended up in a bad experience were based in self-doubt or fear shine some light upon those thoughts. Ask yourself the following questions about the thoughts you’ve let run you:

- Are they true, absolutely? – How do you know? – What evidence do you have to support this truth? – Can you find any evidence to the contrary? – What is holding onto this belief costing you? – What are you getting out of holding onto this belief? – Who would you be, what would you do, what would you have if you did not have this belief?

Instead of focusing upon that which you believe you are not, what you cannot be, do or have, turn your attention to who you are, what you have and what you have done that is positive. You’ll discover that what you have achieved far surpasses what you have not. You’ll realize all the good you have done for yourself and others. Create a new belief, a new perspective about who you are and what you deserve and can experience.

“Many people die with their music still in them.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes

Boost your self-esteem by honoring yourself and your dream. You deserve your dream, that’s why you have it! Notice when your thoughts, comments and actions take you away from that dream. Mindfully think, speak and act in the direction of what makes your heart sing.

Reach that Goal!

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try one more time” – Thomas Edison (1847-1931)

When Thomas Edison was inventing the electric light bulb he certainly had his work cut out for him. Believe it or not after trying 10,000 times he had still not got a working bulb. And his response to someone who suggested he had failed…? – ‘I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.’ What happened after that? He succeeded.

How many times would you try to make something work in your career, team or business? 2 or 3 times? 5 times? 10 times? Do you keep going with an idea for as long as Edison? Would you keep trying after all those ‘failures’?

No? Why not? Perhaps because most of us would lose faith in our idea or our ability to pull it off, lose motivation, decide it’s just not possible.

So what was Edison’s secret? How did he maintain his enthusiasm for and belief in his idea for so long and to such an outstanding level? How did he stay motivated?

First of all he must have truly believed his goal was possible for him to reach, he must have truly wanted to reach it and he must have known why he wanted to reach it.

Then there is a clue in that response ‘I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.’ Every time he tried a way that did not work he quite simply did not see that as a failure.

And he was right. It wasn’t a failure because he now knew one more way that did not work. He had gained knowledge from the attempt. Perhaps he might work out one reason why it did not work and make an alteration accordingly for the next attempt. And that would take him one step closer to his goal.

And that’s one of the key messages here. It’s not just ‘don’t give up – keep going’, but also crucially ‘if it’s not working change the way you’re doing it!’ After all if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.

So if you’ve been struggling to see eye to eye with a member of staff – change your approach. If you are consistently unable to get out of the office before 7pm every night – make changes to your working methods. If your team aren’t all pulling together in the same direction – make changes to your management style.

Think of something you are struggling with at the moment and ask yourself the following questions:

* ‘What is stopping me from moving forward with this?’ Make a list.

* ‘What are the possible ways round the obstacles?’ Make a list.

* ‘What could I try differently this time?’ Make a list.

* ‘What am I going to try differently this time?’ Commit to taking action and give yourself a realistic but challenging deadline for it.

And if you reach the point of giving up remember another gem from Thomas Edison… ‘Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.’

5 Points To Consider To Set Up Your Own Business

Lately you have been thinking of a new direction in your life – because you don’t want to work for a boss anymore, because you want to get out of the roil of that endless routine, because you want to have more time for yourself and your family, because you are seeking new horizons, or simply because you know you are worth more than what a job is worth and want to get fulfilled by achieving something that satisfies you. This is the entrepreneurial voice in your head.

But then your mind gets back to more “realistic” considerations like the global economy in turmoil, the uncertainty of investments and the gambling-like rules of running a business : if it works out for you, you hit the jackpot, but if you fail, you have everything to loose. Then you realize you have to place yourself on the secure side of the fence, searching for guarantees, risk 0f investments, stable businesses and of course predictive outcome. At that point you go back to your old job full of resignation – leaving your ideas in that pending box to “another day”.

The truth is, it is all about LACK OF ACTION. Blaming lack of time or lack of money is a disguise which suits your mind and keeps you satisfied with your decision. But let’s face the facts, you have made no decision – you have just gone the way it has always been.

Building up your own business and reaping the benefits of being self-employed requires effort and investment, but that investment is in reality in YOUR own future. Here are some hints for you to know if a business is right for you or not – just take a notepad and a pen and write down these few points, then sit comfortably in a calm place, open your mind and the answers will pop up in your head as clear as a revelation :

1- What does the business outcome represent for you? Money alone is not a goal – is it going to bring you more freedom in your life, more time to spend with your kids, more travelling around the world? The list is endless. If you know what you want to achieve, the road will be simpler to show.

2- Will you get self-satisfaction by running this business? Will you be able to help others, will you have a smile on your face everyday? Do you like to work on your own or do you prefer being part of a team of like-minded people who join their efforts for the benefit of everyone involved? Imagine yourself in action, and see if you like it.

3- Do you have that burning desire for change? Do you KNOW you deserve success? No business is going to make you successful, it is you who make a business successful, and that is by knowing you are a successful person. What chance do you have of being successful? I can answer that for you – exactly the same as everyone else, you just have to take ACTION. Successful people are not just lucky – they put themselves in a position to be “lucky” and then work hard to make the “luck” show up.

4- Are you ready to take action and make decisions that will somehow make your palm sweat? Are you ready to get out of your own way? Nothing is at risk 0, and if a baby could talk before he could walk, he would probably never walk, it is too dangerous.

5- Have you got the correct business owner mindset? Are you ready to invest in order to get a phenomenal return on investment? Can you stay consistent and focused to run your business at its best? Do you know that your dreams are worth more than other people’s opinions?

Once you have answered these questions, the whole “huge unsurmountable commitment” you depicted to yourself in the beginning just vanishes away. If it is so, then you do believe in what you aspire to, and you should probably take the actions that will make your life be what you want it to be.

People looking for businesses for sale believe that getting into complicated plans and systems makes it look more realistic and achievable. That is because they believe it is the “way everybody does, so it is the good way for me too.” Again, don’t let your neighbor or your work colleague be your advisor – be YOUR OWN leader and you will achieve things you would never have thought possible.

“All progress depends on unreasonable people” – George Bernard Shaw.

7 Steps to Business Communication Success

1163989_uk_traffic_signals_0021What is success? The answer to that question is both personal and institutional for those of us who work in the business world. In essence, success is the ability to accomplish the task at hand. Technically, it is “to achieve one’s aim to prosper”.

You need thriving business relationships to prosper. In fact, we can measure much of our business success in terms of the viability of business relationships. Relationship health is directly affected by the quality of communication. Use the following steps to achieve communication success and to strengthen your critical business relationships.

Step 1: Identify a few communication weaknesses.

Can you think of any communication challenges that you face? It’s time to brainstorm and quickly make a written list.

Here are a few questions to get you thinking about your own communication challenges: * Are your employees happy and satisfied? * Are your clients glad to provide referrals? * Are your partners and stakeholders well-informed and confident? * Do you feel motivated and inspired? * Do your conversations flow?

As you review the bulleted list above and consider your communication challenges, identify each challenge but don’t get bogged down with other details.

Step 2: Decide to address the most bothersome communication weakness.

This choice is yours to make. However, whatever challenge you choose, you will find that the other relationships are naturally strengthened as you develop proactive and positive communication skills. You do not have to fix everything at once in order to benefit from this exercise!

Now that you have selected your challenge, it’s time to stop and think about what makes it so challenging. In other words, if success was easy you wouldn’t be working on this right now. Many leadership or business management challenges are a result of busy-ness. Leaders don’t realize that others need communication that is: * Professional * Complete * Positive * Concise, and * Wholly relevant without any irrelevance

If you are a leader or a manager, communication is your job. People expect you to do it and do it well. The responsibility for communicating is yours. It would be literally impossible for others to compensate for your poor attention to communication.

In spite of the advice of gurus world-wide, there seems to be a reluctance to buy into this idea. We all want to believe that we can just do our jobs well and receive the kudos. We want to believe that we are responsible for our own success. The truth of the matter is that most of us will be hindered, more or less, when we ignore communication or become passive.

Communication may not come naturally, and you may need to work on it. Communication brings power to your professional and personal life. Critical relationships can thrive with your attention.

To gain an understanding of how to resolve the weakness, you need to look at your communication patterns. You will develop communication that is regular and has flow. Communication, however, is not just about giving out messages. Communication is listening and speaking, receiving messages and conveying messages. Typically, listening is the thing that gets us into trouble. We don’t do it.

Step 3: Listen to others for a week.

I know you’re grumbling! Is a week really necessary? Yes. We’re not just talking about passive listening either; you will ingeniously create opportunities for listening. Listening must be practiced, and acting on incomplete information may be more harmful than doing nothing.

Consider how long you have been without the power of listening, and realize that a week is a small price to pay. While you are listening, you are reserving judgment and allowing the answers to come to you. Others often already know where the problem lies. They may even have ideas as to how you can fix the problem. Active listening requires practice, so be patient.

You may politely and nonchalantly ask for input during this time, but keep things casual and neutral by not being too intense and by refusing to form or give your opinion. This gives others the freedom to develop their thoughts and express them without disagreeing with you. Be sure to take notes on potential solutions.

Step 4: Define success and the benefits in this area.

After a week, you will probably have many ideas about how you could move forward. First, take a moment to define your ideal outcome. This is your defined target. You may not feel that you can make the mark on the first try. However, you need to choose to believe that success is possible and likely, and that you will have a reasonably positive response to your efforts. Your attitude affects your motivation and your outcome.

In addition, think about what benefits you hope to achieve. How would life or business be better as a result of your desired outcome?

You are painting the picture of what you’d like to see. For example, “Our clients know that we value their relationship as well as their business. We don’t tell them this; we show them. Every call is answered in a polite manner. Each concern is personally addressed. We listen when they speak. We thank them for their input. We keep them informed of new products and company news. We are considerate in our pricing. We thank them for each purchase. In return, they have no interest in checking out other providers, and they remain loyal in spite of the efforts of our strong competitors. We have steady growth in our revenue.”

Step 5: Make your proactive communication plan, being sure to establish checkpoints.

This plan will come out of your definition of success and your listening activities. Some examples of proactive communication would be providing customer service seminars for your employees, taking on a visible role that reaffirms your commitment to personal service, starting a service blog discussing best practices, scheduling individual meetings to check in with employees, or establishing standards of excellence and rewarding employees who excel or improve. Notice that these items are not remedial. You are not resolving past problems, but establishing a firm foundation for the future.

Also notice that you would choose one activity to plan. For example, if you choose to focus on a customer service seminar, you will define the necessary tasks and place those tasks in your planner. Choose your communication activity based upon whether you need a long-term or short-term effort. Also, consider the availability of resources and plan accordingly.

You may have to practice needed skills. For instance, if you are planning to present a customer service seminar yourself instead of outsourcing, you may need to schedule time to develop your presentation skills. If you are nervous about your skills in an area, practice those skills until you become calmly confident.

Step 6: Implement your plan.

Implement your plan, keeping your ideal outcome in mind as you go. Review checkpoints frequently to ensure that you are on track. Involve others in the plans when possible, or have an accountability partner. As things fall into place, you may be surprised at how well everything is going! Once your activity is complete or the communication fix is in place, it’s time to take a realistic look at what you’ve accomplished.

Step 7: Evaluate the results.

Congratulations! How did you do? If you look at your definition from Step 4, you will be reminded of the gains have you have achieved. You may also note unforeseen obstacles that you overcame. Remember to thank those who helped you along the way, and make sure to reward yourself for your efforts.

Now you’ve seen the power of communication at work. Communicating will become easy (or easier) as you go through the 7 Steps to Business Communication Success again. Communication is the key to your success.

Do You Have Intuitive Business Vision?

One of the things imperative to know when boating is your buoy markers and shore markings. I really didn’t know what an education it would be to learn all the details to safely navigate your path. I have been traveling the same path for the past month and I clearly know the areas to travel and routes to take as I am boating them almost daily, but what if I did it in the dark? What if the safety of daylight was taken away? Would I know where to go or would I sink (yikes) without my safety net?

Yep, you can see where this is going… Last week we got caught out in the boat late at night and were using a flashlight to navigate lobster buoys and dry land. I freaked. I was trying to remain calm, but I was really scared. I felt as if I had been dropped onto a different planet. My heart was racing, my insecurities popped up, and it was as if I had never taken that path and had no clue what to do next.

Once I successfully navigated myself back to land, I was clear that this is what happens to so many entrepreneurs. When circumstance change, we forget everything we ever knew and we behave just like all the times we have traveled our business paths before.

I KNEW EXACTLY where to go… intuitively. I had done it before. I let the one change throw me off and that is what happens in business. We know what to do, we know where to go, we know what we need. It is always intuitive, but we just let the hiccups and changes convince us we don’t. The most authentic marketing strategy and the authentic approach to attracting clients is embracing our intuition and trusting ourselves to know the path.

If you feel stumped in growing your business or frustrated with what you should be doing, go back to the basics and embrace your inner marketing voice.

1. Stop believing you have to do it like “they” do. You are your unique brand… grasp the ideas and approaches that work for you and resonate with you. Disregard the rest and use your voice, your gifts, and your language to market.

2. Don’t make it complicated. You know how to get clients – ASK. Remember that you have traveled this path before. Look to your current circle: friends, family, colleagues, and community. Ask them to have a complimentary session with you, send a referral, or share a gift certificate with a friend.

3. Draw on your past success for the present. Remind yourself of what has worked in the past and leverage that. How did you get that client? Where did those referrals come from? And what brought in money before? Repeat success.

Just because the sun went down doesn’t mean you forget your marketing sense and abandon your inner voice. Your marketing success and your authentic message is within you already…you know what your path is. Embrace your intuition to be ready for what life throws you. That inner voice will navigate you through the business waters- even in the dark.

Whether it is on the field of professional sport or in the Buddhist temple, you will find exponents of the art of mindfulness. Mindfulness – the exact opposite of mindlessness – is the only key you need to unlock a life of peace, calm and effortless success. Doesn’t matter what kind of success you have in mind, if you develop mindfulness, what most occupies your mind will come about – not through you simply wishing for it to happen (and doing, as some books suggest, nothing to bring it about yourself!) – but through the ongoing daily practice and development of mindfulness.

What is mindfulness? Well, for simplicity, let me start by telling you what it’s not! As I’ve already said, it’s the exact opposite of mindlessness. So what – surely few people are truly mindless! Alas, that is far from the case – seventy years psychological research proves beyond any doubt – and from a variety of different perspectives – that at least 96% of us, so-called “normal” people, live mindless lives, day in, day out. The research proves that “normal” people perform all their repetitive tasks (and all tasks become repetitive sooner or later) automatically, without paying them any attention whatsoever. The research proves that “normal” people only pay 1% attention to where they are and what they’re supposed to be doing, in the present moment – the only time and place either you or I have. The research proves that “normal” people only perceive what they expect to perceive and that anything beyond their field of expectation simply goes by unperceived. The research proves that the “normal” person’s life is controlled and created by their subconscious mind which is generally focused in their past.

I could go on – but I believe that the quick snapshot of “normal” people above proves beyond doubt that most of us go through each day mindlessly – the exact opposite of mindfully.

Mindfulness is simply being more attentive to the present moment, to what you are doing in the here and now, to what you are perceiving through your five senses. Your five senses represent the only “interface” you have with the outside world and are, as such, the cornerstone of your ability to be mindful. Unfortunately, normal people pay no attention to their five senses. Rather, when they receive sensory information (this is called cognition) they add their internal subconscious knowledge to that sensory information and perceive what they think is happening, not what is actually happening. This application of so-called stored knowledge to external sensory data is called recognition. We recognise what’s going on for what we think it is – not what it actually is – based on the focus of our subconscious mind (which, as we’ve already said, is focused in the past).

So, mindfulness is simply being more present (than the pathetic 1% presence of normal people) in the present moment. It is not being “single-minded” about what one wants to achieve. It is not being “focused” on one’s goals. It has nothing to do with believing (or not) in your abilities – it has nothing to do with positive thinking (which is simply more thinking that distances from the reality of the present moment) – it is simply being attentive to whatever it is you are doing, wherever it is you find yourself, whoever you find yourself with, in this present moment – and in every present moment.

And that is why so many of my clients get so frustrated when their efforts to develop their mindfulness become derailed. We are bound to be derailed regularly, every day. The cards are not stacked in our favour when it comes to living the mindful life. We have an adult lifetime of so-called normal behaviour – and that’s wilfully acting against our best efforts at mindfulness. We are surrounded by normality wherever we go – the easy temptation is to be normal too. Normal people are behaving mindlessly all around us – it is so difficult not to react along with them. And, so, we fall daily in our efforts to be more centred, more calm, more mindful. But none of this is relevant to mindfulness in the present moment. So what if I lost my head earlier in the day – it’s in the past. So what if I’ve had an awful morning where I got nothing done – it’s the afternoon , it’s now. So what if I am frustrated by my inability to be mindful in the moment – my frustration is the only thing that’s standing in my way to being mindful.

Why is mindfulness the only key you need to achieve effortless success? Mindfulness makes you abnormally present to the present moment – you have presence and presence is both impressive and impactful on those around you. Making an impression makes you more attractive – to the people and events that will lead you along the path towards success. But, most of all, mindfulness means that you will perceive what is actually going on – you will perceive the unexpected, the opportunities that normal people cannot perceive – and it is that level of awareness that will lead you to places that normal people cannot go – towards abnormal success.
