Do you find yourself just trying to hang on and get through the recession? Perhaps you are waiting for things to turn around or something to happen (business partner make a decision, new clients to show up, reorganization at a job to work itself out) before you move forward?

If so, you’re not alone. Many people are playing the “hang in there” and waiting game. But here’s the thing – when you do that, you’re living life like the cat on an old poster of mine. The one where the cat is hanging from a tree branch by one paw and the caption says “Hang in there Baby”. You’re really courting disaster.

When you feel fear or like you’re at the mercy of something “out there”, you find yourself:

* Tensing up as your body constricts

* Stressing out but going nowhere

* Feeling all alone and paralyzed right where you are

* Hoping and praying some Hail Mary effort you put forth will create a miracle or someone else will come save you

Here’s the thing, none of these choices are going to get you where you want to go. (And, yes, not choosing is a choice.) I have yet to find a story of success where someone took the approach of just hanging on for any length of time and were joyful with the results. Sure there may be moments when you need to pause, reflect, and make space to make a decision, but as long as you don’t let days turn into weeks turn into months, that is not hanging on, that is conscious creation.

All the experts I coach with and mentor with share a similar message -You are responsible for your results. This is not just in good times but in all times and all results. While lots of people are sitting around with a beer kvetching about the economy, their job, and having a pity party, people who will ultimately succeed are out there creating their own reality. They are willing to do and be what the majority of people are not.

I used to sit back and look at successful people like these who seemingly had effortless success and made money in sums I could barely count the zeros on, and just be pissed-off. Like why them and not me, right? Until it became as clear as day to me -they were willing to do the things I was not. They were willing to do things differently, take a risk, not follow the crowd of lemmings off the cliff, and stop waiting around for someone to deliver them an answer. They went out and found the answer from other successful people or created their own answers in a new way.

Like the cat in the poster, there really is only one way to get out of a jam where you feel like you’re hanging off a cliff by a branch. First you need to open yourself up to receive (someone to reach their hand out to you). Then you need to trust that the support that shows up is exactly right for you. Then you need to let go and surrender (if you don’t let go, you’ll just engage in a tug of war with the help that shows up).

One thing I know for sure is that if you own or are starting your own business and you’re waiting for things to get better before you invest in your own growth, take a stand for your value, or commit to your marketing, you will be one of those “has-been” businesses at whatever time the economy does turn around. If you are an employee and you’re just hanging in there until things get better or “settle down” before you invest in your own growth, prepare for your next career step, or make a move that’s right for you, you’ll be waiting forever.

During this time of great opportunity (and really every day can be a time of great opportunity if you look) are you going to do something with it or wait around for “someday”? The truth is we rarely regret things that we do; we regret the things we did not do.

So, are you going to wait around and create a trail of regrets or make a decision right here, right now to take your power back, your response-ability and become your own success story? The choice is yours, choose wisely.

Mention the subject of philosophy and many people will react somewhere between mild disinterest to a yawn. Philosophy takes hard work. It takes hard work because you have to think.

And to have the small business growth you desire you must have a clear personal philosophy. After all, how you think will determine how you feel. How you feel will determine how you act. How you act will determine your results. And, ultimately your results will determine your life.

Yes, having a strong personal philosophy is critical to success. You can’t build a house without a foundation. And, the foundation for your success is your philosophy. What is your philosophy?

Your philosophy comes from what you know and from the process of how you came to know all that you currently know. Having the right philosophy is critical to your business success. Why? As each day goes by, you will choose to do whatever you think is valuable. What you accomplish at the end of the day depends on what you think is important.

In the process of owning our own businesses the winds of circumstance will blow over all of us. We have all experienced the blowing winds of heartbreak, disappointment and despair. We all begin at the same point in life. Why is it that when we all have the same destination in mind that our ship of life ends up in many different ports?

Have we not all sailed the same sea? Have we not all been blown by the same winds of circumstance and turbulent discontent?

What guides us to different destinations in life is how we have chosen to set the sail. How we choose to set the sail is our philosophy. The way each of us thinks makes the major difference in where each of us arrives. The major difference is not circumstance. It is the set of our sail. It is our philosophy.

In the final analysis it is not what happens that determines the quality of our lives. It is what we choose to do when we have set the sail and then discover, after all our efforts, that the wind has changed direction.

When the winds change, whether you are starting your own business or running your own business, you must change. Learning to reset the sail with the changing winds requires the development of a whole new discipline.

It may require a new performance strategy or a new marketing business plan. Remember, success, whether you are starting your own business or running your own business, will always involve going to work on developing a powerful personal philosophy. A powerful personal philosophy that will help to influence in a positive way all that we do, and all that we think and decide.

What about all those counter productive beliefs and choices? Where do they come from? They come from misinformation we have accumulated over the years. We must recognize when we are around the wrong sources of information.

Only when we recognize that our sources of our information are incorrect can we shut them off. Only then can we reset the sail with correct information to move toward having our small business successful. Correct information will strengthen your personal philosophy and allow you to sail to your desired destination.

But understand one thing. This will take time. You can change your direction immediately to take yourself to a better destination. But, arriving at that destination will still take time. And, the best part is that when you know you are headed to the right destination you build positive momentum for more opportunities for success.

The focus of this article is to simplify the process of what to look for in starting up your own business. There is a great deal of information on what to look for in starting your own business.

In fact, most people get bogged down by having too much information. In their quest for clarity and as they get more information things start to get less clear. When things get less clear, they get confusing. And when they get too confusing, nothing happens.

In starting up your own business the first point is that you must be passionate not just about the idea for the business, but passionate about the delivery of the product or service. Enthusiasm will make things a 1,000 percent better. Too often I see people who fell in love with a business idea but who do not love doing the actual business.

Secondly, there must be a strong desire to succeed. Desire is the steam necessary to fuel the engine of business success. Small business growth must be planted in ground that is watered every day with of enthusiasm and desire. You may have the best marketing business plan in the world but it won’t happen without your desire and enthusiasm.

At this point check yourself on your enthusiasm and desire. If these are in order then let’s take a look at your reasons for owning your own business. Once again there are many reasons for wanting to own your own business. Here are a few that I believe are important.

First, in running your own business you want to make a difference. This will keep your enthusiasm and desire at a high level. And, when you want to make a difference you must understand that different isn’t necessarily better but that better is always different.

Understand how you are going to be better. That is what will attract your clients or customers. Growing small business is about who you will attract to use your products or services. People love something that is better.

Another important aspect to having your small business successful is knowing how you are going to market and sell your product. A successful performance strategy must include a plan for marketing and sales. It is at this point that you need to stop to check your assumptions and make sure they based as much on reality as possible.

Whether you are in a good economy or a bad economy makes no difference if you are lacking a marketing business plan and the ability to carry it out. It is at this point that you need to have a realistic assessment of your finances. Know what you will need to bring your idea or product to market. Also, know what you will need to live on. This may sound elementary but it is critical.

I have watched too many small businesses fail because there was not the money available for marketing and sales. After all, if you have a choice between taking care of your necessary needs or your business which will you choose? Obviously, your primary need is to survive. As a result, if funds are too limited, the business won’t have the necessary dollars to move forward.

To this point we have covered four areas to look for in starting up your own business.

1. Enthusiasm and passion
2. Desire
3. Marketing business plan
4. Finances

The last point to consider centers around “who” you are. If the business you are starting does not honor who you are then the preceding points are meaningless. After all, if you aren’t doing something that honors you and your gifts and talents then you will be unhappy. When you are unhappy, you are more likely to fail.

Why? You won’t have the enthusiasm, passion and desire to make the other things happen that you must have to make your small business successful. Think about this. I have observed many businesses where the money wasn’t an issue. But, they end up being closed down because the enthusiasm, passion and desire were gone.

Is money important? You bet it is. But without the strong positive emotions to support the logic and viability of your business on a daily basis the prospect of small business failure increases. It increases regardless of the money. Do what you want to do. That is where the true success is.
