Struggling With Motivation to Exercise? Try This Simple Technique

Are you struggling to summon up the motivation to exercise? Are you constantly telling yourself you must get to the gym, but finding that other things just get in the way?

It is a typical scenario, and one that is actually pretty simple to address.

The first thing you need to do, is stop hassling yourself to exercise. You do not have to have willpower of steel or be super disciplined, so you can stop worrying about that right away. Relax a little and have faith that your body will intuitively know what is good for it, if you give yourself a chance to listen to what it is telling you.

Next, you need to sit down! Yes, the first step to successful fat loss is sitting down and doing practically nothing! Get a pen and piece of paper (and a cup of tea – but skip the sugar and cookies) and begin to write down what you want to achieve when it comes to your health and fitness.

Do you want to lose body fat? Do you want to tone up your thighs and bat / bingo wings? Do you want more energy? Do you want to be stronger for daily tasks? Do you want to play a sport better or take up a sport you feel too unfit for?

Brainstorm all these things, and you may find there are some surprising things you attach to fitness, that you hadn’t thought about before. Think about how good your life would be if you could achieve these things – really try to imagine and visualize being slimmer and more energetic, or how you’ll feel when you finally learn to snowboard, if you’ve always felt too unfit to give it a go.

Then write down all the reasons that stop you from exercising.

Do you feel low on energy when you get home? Are you too hungry at the end of the day to go to the gym, but then too full to workout after dinner? Do you struggle to find the time?

Then write down ways you can address all of these. If you are too hungry after a day at work, make sure you take an afternoon snack so you can work out straight from the office. If you struggle with time, consider a time-efficient work out plan, using kettlebells ideally! Realise that there are solutions to all these obstacles.

Then go back to your ‘goals’ list, as that is what you have effectively written in the first step. Then begin to expand on the goals and look into what you will need to do in order to achieve them.

Will you need to exercise? Will you need to look at your nutrition? Will you need to improve your time management?

Then, using all the information you have in front of you, come up with a plan. Write your goals out clearly, and give them a deadline and attach measurements to them. But also state WHY you want to achieve them. Then, state HOW you are going to achieve them, in several clear steps.

Once you have established a clear and compelling WHY (remember to visualise and keep the end result uppermost in your mind) and you have worked out practical steps HOW, then motivation is no longer an issue at all. You see exactly what is required to get the result you are after, and that you truly want, and so will take those actions accordingly.

The next time you find yourself low on energy, you will be able to remind yourself that your workout will energize you. If that is not enough, you can remind yourself that you won’t hit your target if you miss this workout – so the workout is no longer an isolated activity with no purpose, but part of a longer chain of events that will take you exactly where you want to be – to the fitter, slimmer, more confident version of you.

A Brief Guide To Exercise Stretching

By Nick Jervis

The majority of us spend a large chunk of our day in a seated position. Think about it, you sleep for 7-8 hours and most of that may be in the foetal position, you get up maybe drive to work…in a seated position and then get behind a desk, when you get home you sit in front of the TV to unwind. Added to this if you do take some time out for exercise, can you honestly say that you finish your session with a good stretching routine? Just think of your poor bunched up muscles crying out for a BIG stretch!

I realise that I’ve just made a big generalisation but it hopefully helps you to understand where I’m coming from. There are many forms of stretching and much opinion of when it’s better to stretch, before exercise, during, after or none at all! Some people think that we should stretch whether we exercise or not and others don’t. So it can be confusing.

To keep it simple this advice is aimed at those who want to carry out a static stretching routine on its own and not before or after an exercise session. I don’t intend to add any new theories to this debate but what I do want to do is to keep it clear and and concise, so read on!

Benefits of Stretching:

* Can improve your flexibility.
* Helps you to relax.
* Reduces the risk of joint sprain or muscle strain.
* Can reduce the risk of back problems.
* Can reduce post exercise muscle soreness.
* Can reduce tension in the muscle.

Warming Up. Before starting your stretch routine I would recommend that you ‘warm up’ your muscles prior to doing so. Stretching is often mistakenly thought of as a sufficient way of warming up your muscles but its important realise that a gentle warm up prior to stretching is a safer option as your warm up routine will increase blood flow to your muscles and therefore reduce the chance of injury prior to stretching.

A gentle warm up should consist of light rotation of the joints such as the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles followed by gentle to brisk walking or walking/jogging on the spot. This should last approximately 5 minutes or so until you feel warm and slightly out of breath.

Types of Stretches. Stretches can be split into 5 different techniques: Static, Ballistic, Passive, Ballistic/Dynamic and Proprioceptive. If you are a beginner I would recommend the simplest and easiest technique to ease you gently into it which is the Static stretch where you stretch the muscle to a point where you feel the tension and holding the stretch for approximately 15-20 seconds.

Static stretching can improve your flexibility over time and is one of the safest forms of stretching. Good luck with your journey to improved flexibility!

Can Aromas Really Help to Reduce Our Levels of Stress?

Ask any parent who works at home, manages a busy household, or looks after children if they experience stress. Or ask any parent who struggles with work outside the home and is frustrated with having no time to manage their home and kids. Today, even the haven of our homes cannot protect us from stress. At home it comes in many forms and affects both young and old.

Almost everyone today is a victim of elevated levels of stress and anxiety. Even children, much like their parents, lead hectic and stressful lives. But did you know that certain fragrances can help alleviate some of this stress?

It’s true. We can use our noses to reduce our levels of stress.

Rather than reaching for medications to relieve stress, many people are looking for other ways to reduce their levels of stress. Scents are a great way to relax, unwind and reduce stress. Research at Yale University suggests that the smell of spiced apples may be effective in warding off a panic attack.

In a study conducted by Dr. Susan Schiffman, subjects were first trained to relax when introduced to a pleasant-smelling fragrance. Within just a few weeks, these subjects were able to relax the muscles over their forehead—the muscles which, when allowed to remain in a tense position, lead directly to a “stress headache”.

In another study conducted by Dr. Gary Schwartz subjects were asked a series of stressful questions while they were exposed to pleasant fragrances. Compared to control subjects who hadn’t been exposed to these scents, those tested with fragrances were shown to have lower blood pressures, heart rates and even breathing patterns.

Stress at Work?

Who doesn’t experience stress at work! In studies done by Dr. Joel Warm and William Dember, workers who were exposed to the occasional scent of peppermint showed a marked increase in alertness and improved job performance. The significance of this finding may have a large impact on the workplaces of the future.

Overall, studies have found that

* pleasant fragrances help to reduce workers’ levels of stress and promote a healthy mental atmosphere.

* lemon’s invigorating scent has been clinically proven to help clerical workers make fewer computer and data entry errors.

* lavender can help individuals compute equations more quickly and more efficiently.

* peppermint and lily of the valley can help individuals lengthen their attention span.

* pleasant fragrances also promote well-being in employees wherever they gather—in conference rooms, lobbies, etc.

As technology continues to advance, more and more employees will be subjected to lengthy hours in front of computers. Anyone who has experienced more than an hour at a time inputting and analysing computer data knows how difficult it may be to stay alert—especially during the late morning and early afternoon hours. Could it be that a whiff of peppermint may help us to stay awake more than our cup of coffee? Research in this area offers promising hope—especially for those of us who have an intolerance for caffeine.

Japanese companies are putting this research to task and are seeing promising results. Workers who are exposed to regular sprays of scents via computerized odour delivery systems by way of air conditioning and ventilation systems show a marked increase in efficiency and performance. To stimulate employees at the beginning of their workday, companies are odorizing their offices with shots of citrus scents. Then late in the morning, employees are stimulated by swirls of floral-scented odorants. By mid-afternoon these employees are then exposed to invigorating woodsy cypress and cedar scents.

However, employers should be warned that some pleasant-smelling fragrances can actually have a negative impact on productivity. In one study, galaxolide, a musk-smelling scent, had a doubling effect on subject response times.

Cacosmia, or “sick-building syndrome,” is a phenomenon where individuals become ill from low levels of common environmental chemical odours found in paint, building materials and even perfumes. Sufferers tend to experience daytime tiredness and are often shy and introverted. Interestingly, shy, introverted individuals have been shown to be more sensitive to smell than their more gregarious counterparts.

According to “The Smell Report, “If the ‘olfactory-survival-reflex’ theory is correct, it may be that people with high-smell sensitivity become shy and novelty-avoiding because their olfactory receptors transmit more primeval danger-signals making them feel more vulnerable.”

Can I Relax and Create Wealth

1166633__pure Did you know that you can relax and create a thriving business? Relax and create wealth? Isn’t that a contradiction in terms? Don’t successful entrepreneurs constantly rush around?

We are constantly encouraged to rush around and stay busy. It seems like most people are operating at a frenetic pace just to stay in place. No one seems to have the time to relax and enjoy life. This is especially noticeable on public transit on any major city at rush hour. People seem to rush around like chickens with their heads cut off.

However, Wallace Wattles, the author of the Science of Getting Rich, asserts that “There is never any hurry on the creative plane, and there is no lack of opportunity.” He implies that people hurry because they are in a scarcity mindset. They believe that there isn’t enough “good stuff” for everyone and that they have to rush to ensure that they get their share. This belief causes people to operate from the competitive mind.

Mr. Wattles also states that “When you get out of the competitive mind you will understand that you never need to act hastily. No one else is going to beat you to the thing you want to do; there is enough for all. If one space is taken, another and a better one will be opened for you a little farther on; there is plenty of time.”

So how do you operate in the creative plane when you haven’t achieved your goal? Or when you’re experiencing challenges in your business? It would be easy to fall into the scarcity mindset and hurriedly take action because you think that action will be the key to your business success.

However, this is the time to focus on your vision. Spend time contemplating your vision, visualizing what it will feel like when you achieve your goals.

For example, if you want to send your children to private school, picture yourself writing the cheque for the private school. Imagine your children’s excitement on their first day at the new school. Go to the school, talk to some teachers and soak up the energy. Put pictures of the school around your home. As you do so you increase your faith, your belief that you are sending your children to the private school.

Mr. Wattles also recommends that “in times of doubt and indecision, cultivate gratitude.” Spend time thanking God in advance for providing you with the means to send your children to a private school. Thank Him for the great teachers and the wonderful friendships that your children develop at the new school.

As you spend more time contemplating your vision with gratitude that it is manifesting, you will be shown exactly what you must do to grow your business. You relax and take action calmly for you know that you are creating a successful online business. You and your family are living the life of your dreams.
