Dr Harriet Denz-Penhey is an internationally recognized health researcher who has done groundbreaking research into patient self care in serious illness.

There is some really important research coming out in the biomedical journals that few people ever make the time and effort to read. This is a pity because it has a direct impact on how doctors should support you and treat you when you get sick.

You have to remember that doctors are very busy and have to make a living like any other single person or family out there in the community. Doctor’s aren’t paid for staying up to date with the medical literature and there are literally thousands of medically related articles being published each month. No self-respecting doctor could ever keep up. They have to rely on others to feed them with what is important. Most of the research feeders are the drug companies and they don’t pass on other important research which doesn’t improve their profits.

This new research includes a new understanding at what is happening at a molecular level in the cells of your body in the two areas of oxidation and inflammation.

Most people interested in health will have heard of antioxidants and how they help deal with the oxidized products from your cells. These can bounce around in the system and damage cell walls and DNA. However oxidation is needed. If your food wasn’t oxidized then all the cells would die of starvation and so would you! So oxidation is necessary and wonderful – we just need to manage the products well. This is why antioxidants like Vitamin’s A, C & E are needed.

The new finding I want to bring to your attention is that a large amount of damage done by inflammation. Again inflammation has a good purpose – it is the second very important way that the body deals with infections, poisons and trauma (the first being those white cells which engulf antigens without the need for inflammation). Inflammation is when you body reacts by swelling (providing blood and the immune system to deal with the problem), redness and pain. We need the inflammatory process.

However inflammation, like oxidation has some downsides to it that need to be managed. In most cases in our lives the inflammation leads to good outcomes, to healing. The paper cut on our finger self-heals, the influenza virus is defeated after a week or three, the acne spot clears up.

But when inflammation is overwhelming or has too many components to it other pathways can occur leading to chronic diseases like arthritis, to heart disease and to cancers.

Cancer starts as cells are transformed as DNA is changed (transformation). The transformed cells are left alive and are not killed by the immune system (survival). The new cancer cells can then reproduce and eventually invade other tissues, some far from the original site (proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, metastasis). The growths can become so strong they are resistant to chemo and radiotherapy (chemoresistance, radioresistance).

All of these pathways are known in the biomedical literature.

So what can we do to avoid the inflammation that causes this to happen? Well, frankly the biomedical journals are, for the most part, very hard to understand unless you are trained in that area but they do have some lovely gems of information in amongst the obscurities of their research.

Dr Aggarwal at the University of Texas says in one of his journal articles that inflammation is activated in response to tobacco, stress, some foods, obesity, alcohol under some circumstances, infections such as viruses and bacteria, radiation and other environmental stimuli – and I think by this he means poisons. He says that these agents account for as much as 95% of cancers.

Think about it – if those components cover some 95% of the cancers then we should be able to intervene to reduce the likelihood of the cancer occurring.

Sorry we can’t promise that we can totally stop cancer. It is rather more complex than that. However we have lots of pointers as to the bases we have to cover and the more bases we cover the less likely that the big nasty diseases creep through.

So to improve our chances of good health we need to eat nature’s natural immune enhancing foods such as the red cabbage and broccoli, onion and garlic, blueberries and other fresh vegetables and fruit. We need some of these at least a couple of times a day. We need to manage our lifestyle issues that cause stress through improved self and work management, exercise and learning good relaxation techniques. It also helps to avoid taking in poisons wherever possible. Stop smoking and avoid second hand smoke and vehicle pollution.

What it really comes down to is that we have to make a decision to take charge of our own lives and make as many little improvements as possible. Little bit by little bit they add up. And along the way we are improving our quality of life and health not just for now but for the long term as well.

Quick: Which of our five senses more than any other influences our behavior? Triggers our memories? Controls our cravings? Enhances our moods? Ignites our sexuality?

If you replied, “It’s our sense of smell,” then you’re smarter than most. We live in a culture that overwhelms us with stimulation delivered through sight and sound. Even taste and touch are highly valued and utilized to expand our experience of pleasure and sensuality. But our sense of smell has been relegated to the bottom of the sensory pile. It’s an unfortunate place to be for a sense that’s primarily responsible for our quality of life.

Unlike the other senses, our sense of smell is always on duty. Each day, without any thought, we breathe in over 23,040 times and inhale over 238 cubic feet of air. Each breath floods our smell receptors with information about the environment we live in. Smells of pleasure. Awareness. Danger. Sexual attraction. We are capable of recognizing approximately 10,000 different odors, with each odor having the power to influence our moods and behavior. However, most people would be hard pressed to identify more than a couple of dozen. Such is the mystery of this enigmatic sense.

Smell has a powerful effect on behavior. Certain smells can brighten our moods and lift our spirits, like the smell of a good cup of coffee and warm cinnamon buns straight from the oven. An exotic perfume or the smell of your lover’s skin can lead to intimacy and romance while other scents bring a sense of calm and make us feel at home.

Some smells we find repulsive and alert us to danger. Just think of your reaction to the stink of a dead skunk on the side of the road or the smell of burning toast. Such strong smells usually trigger an instant reaction and alert us to take corrective action.

Aromas delivered directly to the smell receptors in our brain have a powerful effect on our behavior. Since birth, our smell receptors have been busy cataloguing every smell that passed through our nostrils. As newborn infants snuggled up against our mothers’ breast, the smell of her skin gave us a deep sense of comfort and safety. That first smell, lodged deep within our memory, still has the power to trigger intense feelings.

The environment of our childhood, with its varied smells, fragrances and odors, built the platform of scent memories, which determines how we respond to the hints of those scents today. The smell of a musty basement, Thanksgiving dinner at grammas or the gym locker room after a basketball game are all powerful triggers that transport us back into our world of memories.

The brain processes information delivered through our other senses by cognitive identification first, which in turn triggers an emotional response. But our sense of smell is unique. It does the opposite. Our smell receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, which controls emotional behavior and memory. Incoming odors first trigger an emotional response, which is then followed by cognitive recognition. That’s why, for example, you’ll respond to the relaxing effects of lavender long before you can identify the specific aroma.

Aromas have long been used to influence behavior. Legend has it that Cleopatra perfumed the sails of her ship sent to meet Anthony so the wind would carry a hint of her desire. For centuries, doctors would diagnose various diseases by smell alone and we all know that our shopping experience is influenced by the smells funneled through the air conditioning systems. Smells are being introduced everywhere – in our household products, our homes, our cars and office environments.

If smells are such powerful influencers of moods and behavior doesn’t it make sense that changing the smell can also change the behavior? Research is pointing to that probability. So while the sense of smell is the least known of our senses, it has recently emerged as a new medical frontier. As research identifies how odor is identified and transmitted, we will be able to use a variety of scents to obtain the maximum benefits we desire. It is the scents-ible approach to creating health and well-being.

We have all heard of IQ (intelligence quotient) which measures our intellectual ability and often predicts school performance. However, the idea of Emotional Intelligence or Emotional Quotient (EQ) is not as well known or understood even though it may determine as much as 80% of a person’s life success. IQ determines about 20%.

The idea of Emotional Intelligence (EI) was proposed in the early 1980′s. Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence (1995) popularized the idea in the United States. Since that time, many books have been written about what it is, why it is important, and how we can improve it.

Here are some things we know about EI:

• It is not set or innate like IQ which represents our cognitive ability.

• The need for EI increases with increased levels of responsibility.

• It influences success in 4 areas of life: performance or productivity, health, relationships, and quality of life.

• It determines who excels in any given job and is the basis for outstanding leadership.

Very simply, EI looks a how you handle yourself and your relationships. Goleman noted in a later book, Working with Emotional Intelligence (1998), that while IQ has been steadily rising over the years, EI has been declining. There is a concern that children are more emotionally troubled than previous generations and will soon be entering the workforce without basic competence in personal and social areas of their life.

Negative emotions or distress erodes mental abilities and decreases EI. The percentage of time individuals feel negative emotions at work is one of the strongest predictors of dissatisfaction and how likely they are to quit. In addition, dissonance or lack of harmony in an environment lowers productivity and achievement.

Moods influence how effective people are – adults or children. Upbeat moods boost cooperation, fairness, and performance in the work place or at home.

Your emotional center (the limbic system) in the brain functions as an open-loop which depends on external sources to manage itself. Of all emotional signals, smiles are the most contagious. Genuine laughter instantly interlocks limbic systems between people. It signals trust, comfort, and a shared sense of the world. When people feel good, they work at their best. An environment that is resonant cultivates an atmosphere of trust and cooperation.

Goleman streamlined the EI model into two large areas: Personal and Social Competence in his book, Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence (2002). Each area has two domains or dimensions with specific competencies in each area:

Personal Competence – how we manage ourselves.

I. Self-Awareness

• Emotional self-awareness

• Accurate self-assessment

• Self-confidence

II. Self-Management

• Emotional self-control

• Transparency

• Adaptability

• Achievement

• Initiative

• Optimism

Social Competence – how we manage relationships

I. Social Awareness

• Empathy

• Organizational awareness

• Service

II. Relationship Management

• Inspirational leadership

• Influence

• Developing others

• Change catalyst

• Conflict management

• Building bonds

• Teamwork and collaboration

The premise is that since emotions are at the heart of effective leadership, the key to being an effective leader lies in learning to handle yourself and your relationships in a positive manner.

Self-awareness is the foundation upon which self-management, social awareness and relationship management are built. These are not innate abilities. They are learned and can be retained through motivation and intentional effort, practice, and repetition. Learning stimulates new neural connections between the emotional and thinking parts of the brain. Self-Awareness is necessary for understanding and self-management. Increased satisfaction and productivity follow.

Improving your Emotional Intelligence helps you be more effective in your career and have a more fulfilling personal life because it:

• Motivates you to do your best

• Strengthens trust to build productive relationships

• Builds resilience to perform under pressure

• Increases confidence and courage to make good decisions

• Builds strength to persevere through adversity

• Clarifies your vision to create the future.

To start a learning plan to improve your EI, carefully answer these two questions:

1. What is you ideal vision of yourself – the person you want to be – and who you are now? Think about your strengths and values as you answer this question. Your learning plan helps you build on your strengths while reducing the gaps between your ideal self and reality.

2. Who are supportive people that can help you make change possible? A coach helps you see things you might be missing, affirms progress, provides for experimentation and practice, and lets you know how you are doing.

It is important to take time to make choices that will enhance your level of happiness and increase your EI starting today. The choice is up to you.
