Want to be a Success? Change Your Life

Is there some aspect of you or your life with which you’re not happy? Are you having difficulty achieving the kind of success you would really like to achieve – whether that’s in business, your career or your personal or sporting life? In other words, would you like to be e bigger success than you are at present? Well, if you want to be successful and happy, you’re going to have to change your behaviour. You’re going to have to take new action. As a client said to me recently, “I decided that, if I wanted to change my life, I had to change my life!”

Let me explain. I first met Billy three years ago. At the time, he was seriously stressed about his job, he suffered from chronic lower back pain, was constantly tired and, as a result, his home life was, to say the very least, less than satisfactory. More recently, Billy spent three days with me in my part of the world, the French Alps. It was the fourth time we’d worked together in three years. In those three years, he’d been promoted to what would potentially be an even more stressful job – right at the very top of his organization. His back problems had vanished and, in fact, he told me he could now do thirty minutes on his local gym’s rowing machine, a couple of times a week – beforehand, he couldn’t even bend down to sit on the rowing machine. He’d also just booked a three week holiday for himself and his family, having spent ten days on holiday at Easter – he, his wife and children were having a great time.

When we first met, I had explained to Billy that the normal adult mind is in constant turmoil – it is “entertained” by roughly 50,000 random thoughts each day. You know the kind of useless stuff – “I wish this guy would hurry up or I’ll be late for my next meeting!” “I wish I was on the beach, instead of the office, it’s such a lovely day!” “I don’t know if I unplugged the toaster!” “I really am too shy to walk up to that guy and say what I feel!” And, the ones that wake you at four o’clock in the morning “What if I don’t get that sale, will I be out of a job, will I lose my house, what will happen the kids?” (‘Cos the ones at four o’clock in the morning often take us on a train of thought to imaginary ruin – more like an express train to hell!).

I also explained that Billy’s subconscious mind was even more distracted – it’s just that, because it’s subconscious, he’d never be aware of the fact that, like all normal adults, his subconscious mind was incapable of paying attention to the here and now, the task in hand, obsessed, as it was, by his childhood conditioning, the snapshots of his formative years which all normal minds dwell on subconsciously. As a result, it was little wonder that he was stressed – the World Health Organization believes stress will be the biggest killer of the 21st century. It was little wonder that he’d been crucified by lower back pain for years – your mental state is at the root of most, if not all, physical illness. And, certainly, you wouldn’t have to be a genius to work out why his home life was spinning out of control.

But Billy not only understood, as most of my clients do, the importance of changing his mind – he actually put it into daily practice – hence, the results that he could so excitedly tell me about. Billy and I worked together to enable him stop the random noise in his head, to enable him calm his mind. Most importantly, Billy practiced and learned how to pay more of his attention to the here and now, dragging his subconscious mind’s attention away from the past and enabling him be more focused on the task in hand. Billy understood that, when you’re more present, you have more presence and that makes you more impressive to the normal people around you. As a result, he’d been handpicked for his new corporate role – without even realising that he might have been in the running – he was more focused on doing just what he was supposed to be doing.

In short, Billy learned how to meditate. And it made such a practical difference in his life that he committed not just to doing it every day – but to doing it for one hour solid every morning. He told me that he realised that if he wanted to change his life, he needed to change his daily life first – get up at six o’clock instead of seven – go to bed at ten o’clock instead of eleven.

If you’re not the success you want to be, your life is not going to change without you doing something practical about it. If your life doesn’t turn you on, you’re doing something wrong – you’re going to have to do something right instead. You’re going to have to find a way to turn yourself on – to focus your attention in the here and now – so that you will stop paying attention to useless thought and so that your subconscious will stop tripping up your today by focusing on your yesterdays. Your success – your effortless success – is entirely within your own control – but you’re going to have to act.

We Are Born Innocent

1180668_droplets_and_bugA few weeks ago, we noticed that there were three bird nests in our yard, with a total of eight eggs. I can’t tell you how excited we became. My family loves the happenings of nature, especially when it represents good tidings.

Two are blue bird nests and one was a family of phoebes. Recently, all three of the nest’s babies were born, so we have eight baby birds in our yard. We take such joy in watching the mother care for her babies, while the father keeps guard close by. What wonder to watch the babies double in size in a week and how quickly they will be mature enough to take flight and start there own life adventure.

I’ve watched daily at how innocent and helpless the little babies are, unable to fend for themselves and totally relying on their mother. It made me begin to think about the beginning of life in general for us all and how innocent we’re born. How we too are totally dependent on our mother and how much we rely on the mentors and role models who surround us to nurture our lives and guide us in the right direction.

So, where did we go wrong? When in our life did we begin to remind ourselves of all the past wrongs we’ve committed, the mistakes we’ve made or the events that we’ve failed at? Why do we insist on focusing upon our negative past experiences and the scarcity in our lives versus positive accomplishments and abundance? Because we believe that what happened in our life yesterday, has something to do with today.

That’s the sad news but I’m here to share some powerful good news, it’s not true. Yesterday has absolutely nothing to do with today, unless you say it does. God created us all with a free will and you are free to choose what you decide to believe and accept into your life. You are the only person in your life that has that power, the power to create who and what you want your life to be.

The truth of the matter is that whatever you believe is true.

That’s right, what ever you consistently tell yourself about yourself becomes your own reality. Now, stay with me for a moment on this thought because I’m going to prove something to you once and for all that will provide you with a breakthrough and tremendous power on creating the life that you choose.

I’m sure you would agree with me that the average person has no problem holding themselves responsible for the past mistakes they’ve had in their life. They have no issue re-enacting the negative events that they’ve experienced and bringing them into their present. So, would you agree with me and acknowledge that you do have the power to create in the present, because you’re already doing it. You’re just focused on the wrong results!

The reason why so many of focus on our negative past events is because we believe that our past has something to do with our present. So, what we end up doing is bringing all the fear, doubt, anger and sadness that accompanied those events when they occurred into the present. Further, it’s not the event itself that can be damaging to who we are today, rather how we interpreted the event in the moment.

What if you could do what is referred to as a “paradigm shift,” which means realize that this is not so. That’s right, acknowledge that there is no correlation what so ever between your past and how you behave because there is not.

Now, earlier in this article we discussed and you agreed that you have the power to create in the present. We agreed that although what you’ve been creating has been based on negative energy, you’ve demonstrated that you do have the power to create.

So, if you have the power to create, just shift what you’re creating from negative based energy, to a positive based one. Shift your thoughts from the self-limiting beliefs of the past to the unlimited thinking of the present.

All behavior is habitual and any behavior can be changed if you first understand why you do the things you do. All behavior is based on thought, so once you shift you’re thinking from past based negative energy, to present based positive energy, your behavior will follow. Once your behavior shifts, so will the actions you take and the results you create. It’s a process, it requires effort and discipline but you can do it.

So, what does all of this have to do with being born innocent. Well, when you were a young baby and you first decided to try and walk, I’ll bet like most babies you fell down. But because you were born innocent and you hadn’t developed a past full of failed events that you’ve given meaning to you didn’t relate falling down with anything.

You didn’t focus on falling down and you didn’t make falling down a mistake, it was just falling down. So, you just got back up and tried again because you’re not focused on falling down, you’re focused on walking… you’re present. The present is the only place where you can create the life that you choose.

The next time you have a challenge in your life, slow down and take a deep breath. Be Aware of where you are, get present if you’re not, remember that you were born innocent. When you’re innocent, the present is full of “unlimited possibilities.” Now go and create the life you desire.

How to Take Real Action to Improve Your Life

What’s the point of telling people about the power of now, if they don’t like now? Lots of people don’t like their lives but the mistake they make is they feel victimized and do nothing about it. Normal people simply react to their perceived now and make matters worse. You need to take action, which can only happen if you look beyond your perceptions and experience the here and now. The result, a clear and present mind, will take real action.

1192999_oatsLots of people don’t like where they’re at in their lives. Some regret their missed chances – my grandmother used to repeatedly tell me that she wished that she was 18 again! The male “mid-life crisis” sees many such disillusioned people trying to re-find their youth – often with the help of a youthful mate! Over two-thirds of people believe that they don’t like the job they’re doing – most say that they do it for the money. Others are in – and prepared to stay in – unhappy, dysfunctional or even violent relationships.

Many people’s “nows” are not all they should be. And that’s just the normal run of events – normal lives that are not too bad. But it can be worse – there are growing numbers of unemployed people as the current economic recession bites. There are many, many people in their mid- to late-50s who were looking forward to a comfortable retirement only to find that their pension fund was primarily invested in bank stocks – and, these days, they’re hardly worth the paper they’re written on (at present!).

And, yet, we’ve all these books, videos, gurus and websites telling people that they need to live in the “Now” – that “The Power of Now” will change your life. What’s the point in encouraging people to fully experience a “Now” that they don’t like or wish to change? Well, first of all, if you wish to change your “Now”, thinking that it’s horrible, feeling victimised by it and wallowing in it is going to change nothing – it’s simply going to perpetuate it. Indeed, even just abject antipathy towards your current lot is just as bad if not even worse – there’s little in life worse than pure laziness.

But before you can change anything, you must first accept that you are where you are and it is what it is. One of the great truths of life is that Now is the only time and place we have. Each Now arises and passes away. All things pass and, no matter how bad you may perceive this Now to be, it will pass. You know this already – most people, when asked what they were worried about, annoyed about or depressed about this day last year, have no idea! It’s past.

In addition, you need actually to be grateful for Now. We all know many people who have no Nows left – and, I’m sure, given half the chance, would have made so much more of their Nows could they have them over. You know the old expression that no-one, on their deathbed, wishes that they’d spent more time in the office? Well, that’s what I’m talking about. Use the Now you have – it’s all you have. And that’s what “Living in the Now” actually means. Not constantly perceiving your current lot through the filter of useless thought. Useless thoughts come in all shapes and sizes – from “I hate my job” (either stop hating it and just do it – there’s loads of research that proves some of the happiest people on earth do what normal people would consider to be horribly mundane jobs) to “I hate my boss” (a particularly useless thought – given that your boss has control over your career as long as you work for them) – from “I wanted to retire sooner” (you can’t if you don’t have the money – you better do something about it rather than moan about it and feel victimised) to “I hate my husband (or wife)”.

These are all thoughts through which we experience a version of Now – but our version has little or nothing to do with the reality of the moment. It’s just our take on it.

Get over yourself – get over your useless thoughts – accept the Now for what it is and start living in it. Start experiencing the Now – paying attention to your five senses rather than paying attention to self-destructive thought. Research proves that if you start truly experiencing Now in this way, you will enter “flow” – a state of mind in which we become empowered. In that “present” state of mind we can take action to get out of the present Now that we think we don’t like. Otherwise, looking through the haze of useless thought, we become paralysed and end up reacting and only making matters worse.

Take real action to bring your life to where you want it to be. That doesn’t happen through wishing, hoping or wanting for something different or better. It only happens when we start taking real action – and real action can only be taken with a clear and present mind – one that is fully present in, fully appreciative of and fully experiencing the reality of Now.
