The Task Is Not to Labor for Money – It Is to Find Fulfillment

Money is the solution to all your problems. If only you had a million dollars – life would be bearable, interesting, enjoyable, maybe exhilarating. With every waking breadth you concede money, money, money is the answer to your prayers. Well is it?

As the concept of money evolved over the millennia – substituting agreements of value for things – money became a substitute for power. The words: “money”, “power”, “property” have evolved as a series of surrogates: with power the primordial desire, and survival in a material world the paramount quest. Things, objects – property, possessions – became proxy for power. Over time money became a proxy for things. The desire for power springs from a natural instinct to stabilize an unstable existence. Money has come to represent what we covet most – power. Money is power!

After the need to survive the most pervasive force in the human psyche is the drive to gain power. We want to be in control, we want to be in charge – we want to be powerful. So by securing prosperity for yourself and your kin, you aren’t looking for money. You really aren’t looking for tangible things; you are seeking power. But to what end?

We are simple, relatively small and powerless creatures making our way in a material existence. We judge our surroundings and our success by what we can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell – this is after all a physical world. And in this physical world we see limited resources, limited time, and lots of competition. We have come to believe, by lifetimes of physical evidence, that our survival and success are dependent on our ability to compete for a share of the resource pie; to accumulate what we can, and thereby achieve some level of power over our existence.

Digging a little deeper leads to the question – Why do we want money? In the final analysis it is not money, nor things, nor power that really matters – these are all means to an end. Life is ultimately all about experience and the experiences we seek are about abundance, about growth, and fulfillment. We seek money for power, we seek power for happiness. Ultimately, it’s all about happiness.

Life is fleeting. We are on a temporary journey, moved by some forces to act – what we seek is happiness – what we get is experience. If experience and happiness are not one and the same, then the task is not to labor for money – it is to find fulfillment.

Money and power are really only tools. What you seek, truly, is to build an abundant, fulfilled and fulfilling life. Money, as a medium of exchange, as a unit of account, and as a store of value is one tool available to you to use in this physical existence. Don’t waste life accumulating money when what you really desire is happiness. Devote your time, energy and talents to the manufacture of joy and money won’t matter.

Conflict Avoidance: Don’t Let it Ruin your Business

By Anne Alexander

625028_lets_talk_about_itRecently I shared with my readers a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, who said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” I asked you to send me your stories about doing something that scared you in the service of your own progress and growth.

I got some great responses and want to share one that touched on an issue that is nearly universal: how to deal with conflict constructively.

This reader wrote that after reading the quote and invitation, she gathered her courage and spoke to a friend whose behavior had been intimidating her for a long time. It ended up being a productive conversation and she and her friend got back on track. Afterward, she thanked me for helping her realize she had the power in her own hands. She faced her fears and acted in spite of them.

A common issue in working with my coaching clients is how to talk with someone about a problem – whether it is about a disagreement you are in the midst of, or it is about an agreement they broke with you.

I recommend to my clients the books Crucial Conversations and Crucial Confrontations both by Patterson, Grenny, McMillan and Switzler. These are excellent books based on over 25 years of studying 20,000 people who had learned to be masterful communicators through their own trial and error.

Here are a couple of key suggestions from the books to keep in mind:

1. Start by creating safety by confirming mutual purpose and mutual respect. Mutual purpose means you both are working toward a common goal, such as growing a great company or coming up with the best sales promotion.

Mutual respect applies, as well, even if you have different opinions about the situation. If people feel that you don’t respect them, it’s impossible to have a productive conversation. They will start to defend their dignity.

2. Avoid what is called the “fundamental attribution error” (what a mouthful!) where you decide the reason someone is acting they way they are is because of a permanent character flaw, rather than situational reasons. Better to assume this person has good reasons for acting the way they are by asking yourself: “Why would a rational, reasonable person be acting this way?” Better yet, talk to the person and don’t assume you know why they are acting (or have acted) the way they are.

3. Use nonjudgmental, factual language that is based on observable facts. We often confuse our story with the facts. The authors ask you to ask yourself: “Can you see or hear this thing you’re calling a fact? Was it an actual behavior?”

Example:

Fact: Your co-presenter gave 95% of the presentation and answered all but one question. Story: Your co-presenter doesn’t trust you.

Conclusions are subjective, so be careful with your language and also see the next tip.

4. Use tentative language: “It sounds like perhaps…” I’m starting to wonder if…” “I’ve noticed something that seems like…” “I know this is probably not true, but…” This is not being timid; rather it helps prevent a strong reaction in the other person. When we use strong black or white language, we can usually count on a strong reaction back.

Check out these books for a lot more guidance on skillfully handling challenging conversations. But whatever you do, don’t avoid challenging situations for too long. As with my subscriber who emailed in, you have business and personal relationships which depend on your doing just that. At the heart of successful business is great communication.

The only way to get great at communication is to practice! That includes stumbling along the way, but like any skill, you do get better. So whether something happened a long time ago or you’re in the midst of it right now, gather your courage, take some new skills, and practice. You have only your limitations to lose and amazing breakthroughs to gain.

Size DOES Matter! Motivation Lessons From A Mosquito

1197436_gods_bug1It is a frailty of the human condition that many people have. Perhaps it is lack of self worth, or a lack of self esteem that drives it – that “I’m just not good enough” persona. For example, how many times have you been to a party, social event or restaurant and felt that you were not up to the same level as all of the “beautiful people” there?

Maybe their suits or dresses were flashier.

Or they were slimmer.

Or their hair was less gray.

Or perhaps these people drove up to the front door and left the keys to their expensive, new Mercedes, BMWs and Cadillacs with the valet attendant while you “self parked” your tired, 10-year-old car w-a-a-a-a-y in the back of the lot so that no one would notice.

Does this mean they are any better or successful than you are?

Of course not!

It all comes down to what I call – THE ATTITUDE OF YOUR MIND. The attitude of your mind affects many things including the expressions of your face, determines the actions you make, impacts your physical health and regulates your life.

At this point many of you, especially those who are “set” in your ways, may ask: “How can I change the attitude of my mind? How can I, after months and years of discouragement and of going through the motions, suddenly conceive and carry out a plan for doing something that will change my current situation and make my life more rewarding?”

The answer is that it can be done, and others just like you have done it.

Even if you consider yourself of AVERAGE ability, you can be successful, independent, free of worry, and be your own master, from this point forward, if you can commit to do these two things.

1) Einstein once defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. How about what you are doing? If you are not getting what you want, when you want it become AND remain forever dissatisfied with what you are doing and your situation today. In other words, shoot for the moon.

2) Develop in your mind a belief that the word IMPOSSIBLE was not intended for you. Build up in your mind the confidence and courage that enables the mind to use its power.

Bette Reese once said, “If you think you are too small to make an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room”.

So in conclusion, here’s the moral of my story to you…

Size DOES matter. Within you, even at this very moment you have the power to take action and make an impact.

It is up to you…

Benefits of Living Life with Purpose

896613_liquid_backgroundWhy we should lead a purposeful life? What are the benefits of living life with purpose? No one comes here on this earth without any purpose.

If by the God’s grace you are here in the form of human being, nothing better could have happened to you than this. You are one of those fortunate creatures who are blessed with God’s best architecture.

You should be thankful to the Almighty for His creation and blessings.

Human birth is the best of all incarnations: To incarnate in the form of human being has been considered the best birth on this planet.

Because you are the one who can think and act better than any other living beings. You are gifted with a brain, superior than any computer, a pious soul and a heart full of compassion and love.

You have been blessed with all those faculties that could stop the flow of rivers and turn the direction of storms. Still you are yelling and sound miserable? Get up and shed your somber and distress!

You do not deserve to be the way you are today! You are here for some destined purpose. Now it’s your task to identify that purpose. You must find it as you have been bestowed with all that might and knacks to find your life purpose.

You have been designed by the God, the greatest architecture, with the best possible traits within you. How you could be down in fervor and spirit!

Your life purpose is within you: Are you still wondering? Let me help you! Just try to find out what pleases you the most.

What you are passionate about. What enchants you the most! What you find yourself good at? Whatever your answer is that is your first step towards your life purpose.

Don’t blame others for your condition: If you are miserable and frustrated today don’t blame it to destiny or circumstances. It’s rightly said, “A man gets what he actually deserves.”

It’s all your own creations. You need to look back where you lacked in your efforts to reach your goal in life. Where the drawback was? Strengthen it and start again with even more force and enthusiasm.

Pull your socks and give one more try with greater energy, inspiration and audacity! Who knows if your goal is only an attempt away!

There is no power that can restrain you from reaching the purpose of your life if you are armed with adequate enthusiasm and perseverance.

Nirvana the ultimate path to fulfillment and contentment: It’s not sufficient to only find purpose in life. It’s all about leading and fulfilling that purpose as well. Because life with a purpose will bring happiness and a sense of contentment which is rare to find even after being bestowed with whole lot of authority, money and power.

This is the reason people are wondering in search of peace and fulfillment. It is not easy to earn money and fame today but it is more difficult to attain that level of peace and enlightenment which is the ultimate goal of all human being.

In other words “Nirvana” is the last step towards happiness and peace. It is a state of mind where there is tranquility everywhere and the mind is free from cravings and lusts. This state of mind can only be attained when you have a purpose in life.

This is one of the biggest benefits of living life with purpose. And to find purpose, you need to grill your consciousness repeatedly to extract the purpose behind your birth on this earth.

Listen to your consciousness because there is no bigger well wisher than your own inner voice. Because this voice never lies and perhaps never dies as well.

Motivation & The Blues!

960054_lilly_dot_comWhile I like to work swiftly with clients toward their outcome, I’ve never been one for what I call the ‘double jeopardy high-five’ motivational approach. Too much of the ‘wahooooooo!’ or ‘Yaaaay goferit!’ makes me want to puke.

I’ve certainly worked with clients who’ve come to me after seeing a ‘wahooo’ coach or attending a ‘wahooo’ seminar or training. And while the initial effect for them was ‘yay!’, like an old plaster peeling off round the edges, they soon plummeted down to earth with a rough bump.

I remember one corporate client telling me she felt more inadequate and unskilled than she did before the seminar. Clearly she was doing something wrong for the seminar not to have worked… which made her feel even worse about herself. Oh pleeeez!

Of course it hadn’t worked because her emotional, psychological and cognitive state was such that she was in a change process. Precipitous ‘wahooo-ing’ lays double-whipped cream over a cake that’s not yet been cooked. Pretty sloppy!

Another corporate client was very clear about what happened. He said he realised he needed to stop papering over cracks and encouraging other people to do so too. When we worked with what he needed it was time out for reflection and chilling as a way forward from his blues.

Down time rather than high up time which, of course, could come later if he chose.

Times of aliveness and dormant times are in fact the rhythm of nature. To our cost, we’ve discovered we’ve impoverished soil by continuously growing on it with artificial fertilisers. Just like the earth, we need time out to reconstitute and develop our potential.

So, be sure your motivation isn’t the hype type which pops like a balloon at the first pin it comes across. Motivation comes from purpose, passion & power… and the process of growth within.

So, what to do if you’re motivation has got up and gone? Here’s some tips…

***Accept it for now!***

It’s normal to have ups and downs. It’s all part of being human… and I just don’t believe anyone who says they’re never down. What?! Never?! If you tell yourself it’s OK and it’s just for now, you’ll be surprised at the inner relief and relaxation you’ll feel.

***Nourish Yourself***

This is a time for pampering. So go for fragrant baths, massage, or listening to inspirational music, or visiting an art gallery. Draw, paint, walk, write, dance… Do whatever it takes for excellent care of you, to give yourself grade A nourishment during this fallow time

***Monitor Your Language***

It’s so easy to fall into talking with negativity and self-abuse language. So monitor what you say to others and, most importantly, what you say to yourself! When you’ve caught yourself at it, reframe what you’ve said. Like, ‘I’m learning to write more courageously’ rather than ‘My writing’s a pile of doo-doo!’

***Vision Buddy***

And, if you haven’t done so already, entrust your vision of how you want things to be to a great buddy. Ask them to gently remind you from time to time what you’re working towards with encouragement and love. Because even in the down time you need to be reminded you’re still moving forward however static it feels!

Then, as all things pass, so will the Summertime Blues. And, like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, you too can spread your wings newly invigorated and motivated from within.

How Positive Thinking Translates To Business Success

1129769_peacockAny business coach or executive coach will tell you, if you think success, you will become successful. That’s the power of positive thinking, a mental attitude that is crucial in business to realize ultimate success.

Executive management training emphasizes positive thinking to effectively achieve successful results. As a positive thinker, you manage employees better, grow your company successfully, improve sales figures, enhance communication skills and have a better outlook on business challenges.

While “Think Positive” is a popular expression, business consultants point out that positive thinking is about upbeat communication, self-esteem and confidence. Business coaching can provide you with communication skills and mind exercises that will tune you in to positive thinking.

According to business consultants, people with a positive attitude have body language that exudes power, expressiveness and confidence. Since positive thinking begins subconsciously, a business coach or executive coach can take you through the process of turning a negative into a positive.

Your business will run more effectively if your attitude and thoughts are geared towards positive production. Dwelling on negatives, say business consultants, drains your creativity and energy. As executive management training shows, it is natural to look at business challenges as something negative. But business coaching shows you how to approach challenges and issues with a positive outlook that will translate into success.

Communication as one way positive thinking can translate to success. When you talk with others using positive words and express positive nonverbal communication, you are seen as someone who is knowledgeable and credible. As business consultants point out, people want to do business with someone with those attributes.

According to business consultants, research shows that business success is 88% attitude and 12% education. If your equation is off balance, business coaching can get you back on track. It’s important to use executive management training to help you uncover areas in your business that rely on positive thinking for success. A business coach or executive coach will identify these areas and work with you on an action plan.

A business coach or executive coach teaches how to use positive thinking to land a sale, effectively run a business, and retain customers and employees. Part of the process is communication skills, using positive words that depict images of strength, success and joy. Any type of communication that your business does should reflect a positive image. It’s best to get the input of trained professionals, such as executive management training experts, on these written materials to ensure the wording is reflecting an upbeat message.

Sales and customer service are areas where business coaching can create success through positive thinking exercises. How you use communication skills to address problems is another way. Using positive communication techniques with employees and clients help to portray a good image of your company.

While it’s human nature to have negative thoughts, executive management training or business coaching can provide you with tips on how to replace them with constructive thoughts. By using a business coach or executive coach, you can learn how to think positive in any business situation and have a successful outcome each time.
