How to Attract Personal Happiness

The ‘Golden Rule’ occurred in the Greek and Chinese cultures thousands of years before the Christian era: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The spirit of the Golden Rule is one of generosity and altruism and is at the heart of any personal networking and ‘right’ living. Ralph Waldo Emerson said ‘To have a friend, you have to be one’, and his words are as true today as they ever were.

You can test this out yourself by completing the following simple exercise:

List ten people you know best: 1 – 10

After each name, write an ‘H’ if the person is happy, or an ‘N’ if the person is not happy. (H/N S/N) Then write an ‘S’ if the person is selfish or a ‘U’ for unselfish. Rimland in Psychological Reports (51); Brain/Mind Bulletin 1983 defines ‘selfish’ as:

“A stable tendency to devote one’s time and resources to one’s own interests and welfare – an unwillingness to inconvenience oneself for others.”

In his experimental study, the 2000 individuals who completed this exercise reported very few individuals who were both happy and selfish. The findings represent an interesting paradox.

Selfish people are, by definition, those whose activities are devoted to bringing themselves happiness. Yet at least as judged by others, these selfish people are far less likely to be happy than those whose efforts are devoted to making others happy.

So the Golden Rule in networking, as in life, is if you think about the other person rather than yourself, not only is that going to increase your empathy and rapport skills but it will make you a much more attractive person to know and be a magnet for personal happiness.

Another vital part of your networking skills is your ability to build rapport quickly and effectively with others. Successful rapport building will attract others to you and in turn attract personal happiness.

To build rapport successfully with another individual you need to understand ‘where’ they are coming from and have ‘empathy’ with them.

People often think of empathy as a mystical commodity, a special, almost uncanny ability to experience the thoughts and feelings of someone else. In fact ‘empathy’ is quite simply applied imagination and only requires a little exertion and discipline.

The next time you are sitting in a room conversing with three or more people, try this very simple activity:

Temporarily remove yourself from the conversation. Be very quiet for a few moments. Pay particular attention to the person doing the most talking.

Imagine the following things: Imagine the physical sensations the speaker is experiencing.

Mentally place yourself in that person’s body, sitting or standing in a particular position, eating the same food, drinking the same drink.

Mentally become that person. Do you feel energised? Tired? Irritated?

Imagine what kind of day the speaker has had – using all your knowledge about the speakers’ day. If you know little about the person, guess.

Continue to imagine yourself as that person. How does your day colour and affect what you are saying? Imagine the person’s relationship’s to everyone in the room – including yourself.

Continue to mentally be that person. What kind of feelings are generated by the people around you? How do they affect the things you say?

Now step back into yourself and rejoin the scene. Does your own role in the conversation feel different? Empathy, like memory is a creative act, not a mystical property and it requires imagination and practice.

It lies within the grasp of all of us.

A Different View on Happiness and Peace

1157635_white_eye2Are you tired of the common madness that has dominated the world for thousands of years? In my opinion, we must first find genuine happiness to experience a lasting peace. If we do not have personal happiness, it usually is because we are out of balance. Once the balance is restored, it is possible to actually enjoy our activities regardless of how mundane. We seem to be able to do them effortlessly with grace. Happiness is the immortal nectar. To remain nourished, we need an adequate supply of the food of happiness. Perhaps, more of us need to eat and drink the light of God, the primordial food of the universe. The ego is the ultimate black hole. It sucks in light but emits none.

For humanity to be finally happy and at peace, more individual effort is required. Individual responsibility and a greater understanding of the purpose of life are prerequisites for a lasting healing. To live in dignity and peace, our eyes must be wide open. Most of us desire peace. What many do not fully understand is that true peace is a higher state of consciousness that requires inner knowledge and active application. True peace is a state of consciousness that originates on a higher plane than the physical.

The same is true for happiness. True happiness belongs to a sphere beyond that of the physical body, the heart or the intellect. The peace and happiness the world is seeking is already within. It needs to be rediscovered. On a spiritual level, peace and happiness are one. They cannot exist apart from each other. You cannot be genuinely happy and the world at large cannot be happy unless something stable and unchangeable is established within. All of us must strive for mastery over the lower nature and with effort bring the invisible light of the divine nature into visibility. Once our higher nature is firmly established within, we will have the peace and happiness we desire.

Too much importance is focused on intellectual activities and technical achievements. The focus will not bring lasting inner peace or world peace. If we look deep enough, we realize that seeking is always a form of the quest for the Light of God. No one can genuinely be happy if the field of vision is too narrow. If you desire permanent peace and happiness, it is time to open up and take the whole world into your embrace. Unconditional love will make this possible.

Happiness is a gift of the heart and not the intellect. Happiness and peace are never a question of chance or luck. They depend on you. The state of mind has to be cultivated. It is vast and infinite, not brief and limited like pleasure. All human beings want happiness, but they don’t know how to go about it. True happiness requires a great deal of work, will power and the development of discernment. It also requires that you love your self. Happiness is in the efforts we make.

Many people are concerned about money right now. If you want happiness, it is not only money you need but spiritual light. If you love God’s Light, it means that you already possess spiritual gold. You are rich in qualities and virtues that you can share with others. Abundance, wealth and order must be first internal. The one thing that will provide permanent hope, peace and happiness is a firsthand connection with God’s Light. Ask to be conscious of Light. Ask that everything you do and your physical body be infused with Light.

When we are open to the Light of God, we learn to sustain a balanced state of consciousness regardless of how tired, discouraged, sorrowful we are or the temporary misfortune being experienced. We are wise when we do not allow the outer influences to interrupt our faith. The beginning of liberation and happiness is when we understand that turning to the inner world is the answer for a permanent stability of the outer world. The evils of the world are temporary; good lasts for all eternity.

True happiness and peace lies in a constant attention to what is good and beautiful. It is a state of mind and heart, a sensitivity to all that is divine. As we gradually evolve in our soul’s understanding, the two main weapons we are to use against the lingering darkness are love and light. Together, let us make a conscious effort to live in an awakened state of consciousness. A heightened awareness will make it possible to leave the world of fate and enter a world of grace.

It is very important to understand that lasting results manifest when we work for the good of all. I firmly believe we will experience the peace and happiness we desire if we remember to transform whatever we are doing by adding a spiritual element. Once the inner power is felt, there is no stopping us. Let us unite and break down the wall of separation and darkness. Shifting from a materialistic worldview to a heightened spiritual view can do it. Taking a good hard look at our selves and making the necessary personal changes will increase the possibility of peace on earth and good will toward all.
