The Journey to Becoming Yourself

By Jan Engels Smith

In a world full of stress, deadlines, needs, and scarcity, it is sometimes hard to determine that you have any power. Helping yourself can feel like an overwhelming and unattainable mission. However, we also live in a world full of new information and understandings. Ideas of self-empowerment and the feelings that these truths bring is testimony for a new way of thinking.

The universe is unlimited, and, if you choose to explore it, you will awaken to a whole new way of knowing—a whole new way of being. Spirit is available to all people at equal levels; there is no “better than,” or “more deserving.” The choice to raise your consciousness means to broaden your awareness, open up to new possibilities, step out of your comfort zone, and allow information other than what you already “know.”

Spirit has many names: God, Great Spirit, All That Is, Mother/Father, Great Mystery, Allah, and Lord. All are interchangeable. Your spirit, which is housed in your body, is part of that giant whole. In fact, everything is made up of the same energy. All things—every tree, rock, grain of sand, gust of wind, drop of water, animal, insect, bird, planet, star—are expressions of the divine, and we are all interconnected in a divine and profound way.

You are an incredible spirit of divine perfection, the same composition as Spirit. Creator is an ocean and you are a drop of water in that ocean. You carry within you the exact components and properties of the entire ocean. You are made of Spirit, in the reflection of Spirit, and Spirit is in you. Continue reading

Are You Just Trying To Wait And Hang On?

Do you find yourself just trying to hang on and get through the recession? Perhaps you are waiting for things to turn around or something to happen (business partner make a decision, new clients to show up, reorganization at a job to work itself out) before you move forward?

If so, you’re not alone. Many people are playing the “hang in there” and waiting game. But here’s the thing – when you do that, you’re living life like the cat on an old poster of mine. The one where the cat is hanging from a tree branch by one paw and the caption says “Hang in there Baby”. You’re really courting disaster.

When you feel fear or like you’re at the mercy of something “out there”, you find yourself:

* Tensing up as your body constricts

* Stressing out but going nowhere

* Feeling all alone and paralyzed right where you are

* Hoping and praying some Hail Mary effort you put forth will create a miracle or someone else will come save you

Here’s the thing, none of these choices are going to get you where you want to go. (And, yes, not choosing is a choice.) I have yet to find a story of success where someone took the approach of just hanging on for any length of time and were joyful with the results. Sure there may be moments when you need to pause, reflect, and make space to make a decision, but as long as you don’t let days turn into weeks turn into months, that is not hanging on, that is conscious creation.

All the experts I coach with and mentor with share a similar message -You are responsible for your results. This is not just in good times but in all times and all results. While lots of people are sitting around with a beer kvetching about the economy, their job, and having a pity party, people who will ultimately succeed are out there creating their own reality. They are willing to do and be what the majority of people are not.

I used to sit back and look at successful people like these who seemingly had effortless success and made money in sums I could barely count the zeros on, and just be pissed-off. Like why them and not me, right? Until it became as clear as day to me -they were willing to do the things I was not. They were willing to do things differently, take a risk, not follow the crowd of lemmings off the cliff, and stop waiting around for someone to deliver them an answer. They went out and found the answer from other successful people or created their own answers in a new way.

Like the cat in the poster, there really is only one way to get out of a jam where you feel like you’re hanging off a cliff by a branch. First you need to open yourself up to receive (someone to reach their hand out to you). Then you need to trust that the support that shows up is exactly right for you. Then you need to let go and surrender (if you don’t let go, you’ll just engage in a tug of war with the help that shows up).

One thing I know for sure is that if you own or are starting your own business and you’re waiting for things to get better before you invest in your own growth, take a stand for your value, or commit to your marketing, you will be one of those “has-been” businesses at whatever time the economy does turn around. If you are an employee and you’re just hanging in there until things get better or “settle down” before you invest in your own growth, prepare for your next career step, or make a move that’s right for you, you’ll be waiting forever.

During this time of great opportunity (and really every day can be a time of great opportunity if you look) are you going to do something with it or wait around for “someday”? The truth is we rarely regret things that we do; we regret the things we did not do.

So, are you going to wait around and create a trail of regrets or make a decision right here, right now to take your power back, your response-ability and become your own success story? The choice is yours, choose wisely.

Considering Business Life Coaching? It’s About Coaching Success

1188746_peony

Most of us have been coached at one time or another in our lives. For many of us it took place in grade school and high school. You may have been coached in athletics, dance, drama, debate or some other area. Regardless, coaching is about creating a winning performance strategy and a successful outcome.

Business life coaching and business coaching are no different. Their goal is to help you create your own performance strategy and design the successful outcome you desire. Business life coaching may differ from business coaching in some cases. Ultimately both are about the individual who is being coached. One may have a slightly narrower focus on business outcome but regardless, the success of coaching rests on the individual being coached embracing personal growth to change their thinking.

How do you create that winning performance strategy? Whether you have a small business coach or not there is one essential ingredient that can help you to move to the success you desire more quickly. You must have a finished picture of the future in your mind. Once you do then it will become clear as to what you have to do in the present to have the future you desire.

And, to have the future you desire you must embrace change. Only when you change your thinking will you change your habits. When you change your habits you will change your activity. It only follows when you change your activity you will change your results. And, when you change your results you will change your life.

How do you find the right coach for you? It is a question with no easy answers because there are coaches for virtually any area you can think of. Are you the entrepreneur successful in many ways but wanting to upgrade areas of your life? Are you in a corporation looking for executive business coaching? Do you have a small business running well yet you want more small business growth?

Here’s a specific example that may help. Let’s say that small business growth is your main concern. In this instance, it might be best to find a business life coach or business coach with a small business background along with a strong emphasis on personal growth. Why? In small business the business will grow only to the extent of the personal growth of the owner and key employees. Ultimately, the best coach for most is the one that can help you design pathways to your success. Understanding and good chemistry are essential for a successful coaching experience.

How to Get the Help You Need

1050851_sunburstAre You Afraid to ask for Help?

As a member of two MasterMind Alliance groups, I was invited to talk with my good friend Teresia about this topic.

That interview has been recorded and you can request a copy of it by sending me a quick e-mail.

One of the things we talked about during that interview is the benefits of being part of any MMA. In my experience, there are a number of benefits. But the one I’d like to discuss today is the Personal Growth that can happen for an individual.

Personal Growth is, by its very nature, personal.

So what it looks like for you, might be very different than the way it shows up in my life.

The stuff each of us needs to work on is highly personal.

In my case, one of the things that was a personal challenge was my fear of asking for help.

That’s really silly, because — for those of you who know me — I teach about how women innately love and support one another. It’s a concept I truly believe, and in fact, I’m co-authoring a book on that very subject.

So I have to ask myself why I was afraid of asking for help.

In order to better understand this, let me go back a couple of years.

I attended a seminar called ‘Sacred Gifts’ given by my friend Monique. In that weekend event, I learned about all the different Sacred Gifts that we have. And I learned about my own gifts. This was really an eye-opening workshop because I discovered that there were certain gifts I was given, and there were others that I wasn’t given. Well, if I wasn’t given the gift, I couldn’t very well be good at it, could I?

So, this workshop freed me up to stop focusing on the things I couldn’t do, and start putting my energy into using the gifts I HAD been given.

Fast forward now to the present.

So here I was with a challenge facing me — it was a business I had hoped to invest in and was pretty excited about. But I didn’t have the first idea how to determine the soundness of this investment. It was making me crazy actually. My brain was trying to imagine all the what-ifs, the downsides, the upsides, and frankly — I was not getting much sleep.

I raised this in one of my MMA phone calls. One of the lovely ladies in the group immediately piped up and offered some assistance; she had several accountant friends who she thought might help, and she promised to get in touch with them for me.

I was stunned!

Just like that?

Could it be that easy?

Of course, she proferred! This wasn’t like work to her; she had no fear around asking her friends to support me. And why should she? They were her friends and she knew that her friends would be there when she needed them.

So why had it been difficult for me? What was I afraid of?

At first, I didn’t know the answer to that question. But then I remembered my sacred gifts. When someone asked me to perform a task that used one of my gifts, I’d be the first one to step up and say ‘Yes’. I realized that just because something was tough for me didn’t mean it would be a challenge for others.

What a relief! And what a fantastic discovery! My mind started racing — just think of the possibilities.

Now, when there would be something difficult for me, I could ask for help. And I didn’t need to worry that my request would be turned down.

If something needed to be done and I couldn’t do it, all I needed to do was find someone who could. That’s where my MMA has come into play — time and again, they have been there for me. If they didn’t have the knowledge or the wherewithall to help, they’d recommend someone who could. And, more importantly, would.

Now I spend much less time fretting about the stuff I can’t do. I just ask for help. And I usually get the help I need. And I have far more time to do the things that are fun for me, more time for play, for relaxation. And I don’t feel guilty about it, because the person who is doing it for me loves doing it.

How cool is that?!?
