How to Live Life More Abundantly

1080823_spider1 Our understanding of this life colors the reality we experience. Most of humanity binds itself into the drudgery of an isolated, perilous existence — an existence grounded in the known – an existence of sight and sound and feeling. We believe we have limits. We believe we are powerless. The often-misunderstood truth is that our boundaries are not static or fixed; home is not here, and we can go home. Something outside physical reality exists.

A power, beyond our own, organizes and animates what we experience. When we limit ourselves we follow a script of scarcity, a script of sacrifice, a script of desperation. Conflict, challenge, and effort are component parts of the drama lending depth, texture, and context, a credibility the ego demands. But we need not revel in the drama; we have a choice, and we can choose another way.

Life is infinitely more than the limited physical reality we readily accept. Understanding that another reality exists is beyond intellect, in the realm of faith. Faith in an ultimate truth requires a willingness to move beyond intellect to be open to a truth that seeks to reveal itself to us.

Our very existence, our awareness of life and this physical reality, is like a dream. Yet buried in the dream is a gift, a promise granted us. The promise is one of opportunity and adventure, risk nestled in security. We are like children learning to ride a bike. We are scared and exhilarated at the same time, but still under the guiding hand of a loving parent.

The power that animates and energizes this physical reality offers alternatives. We have unlimited resources and vast potential to draw on to discover and create in this playground. We have the power to choose.

To discover the truth you must choose to follow the guide leading you home: that still small voice that whispers to you in times of trouble, that implores you to turn at times of decision, that seeks your happiness. That force, bringing joy to a sometimes sullen world, shows you the way.

Sages and saints guide us to doorways of spirit. We can choose to be open to the promise and potential of an unlimited life of peace, love, and joy, or we can succumb to the weight of the drama. The promise is a life of unlimited potential. We need only orient on the promise and potential of each life to have life and have it more abundantly.

The Journey to Becoming Yourself

By Jan Engels Smith

In a world full of stress, deadlines, needs, and scarcity, it is sometimes hard to determine that you have any power. Helping yourself can feel like an overwhelming and unattainable mission. However, we also live in a world full of new information and understandings. Ideas of self-empowerment and the feelings that these truths bring is testimony for a new way of thinking.

The universe is unlimited, and, if you choose to explore it, you will awaken to a whole new way of knowing—a whole new way of being. Spirit is available to all people at equal levels; there is no “better than,” or “more deserving.” The choice to raise your consciousness means to broaden your awareness, open up to new possibilities, step out of your comfort zone, and allow information other than what you already “know.”

Spirit has many names: God, Great Spirit, All That Is, Mother/Father, Great Mystery, Allah, and Lord. All are interchangeable. Your spirit, which is housed in your body, is part of that giant whole. In fact, everything is made up of the same energy. All things—every tree, rock, grain of sand, gust of wind, drop of water, animal, insect, bird, planet, star—are expressions of the divine, and we are all interconnected in a divine and profound way.

You are an incredible spirit of divine perfection, the same composition as Spirit. Creator is an ocean and you are a drop of water in that ocean. You carry within you the exact components and properties of the entire ocean. You are made of Spirit, in the reflection of Spirit, and Spirit is in you. Continue reading

Improving Memory

By Michael Logan

Memory Aging

So you are my age, 61, and worried about memory aging? But you are a Boomer and we have grown up with a “can do”, “we can change it” kind of mindset, and over the course of your life, you have watched your world change because of choices you and others have made individually or in concert.

You were in college when the moon landings occurred and you have learned how to use computers and technology, and you have watched the flow of information explode, and you figure somebody somewhere is doing something about this memory aging issue, maybe because they are your age.

Well, your suspicion is correct. There are many people exploring the memory aging issue and coming up with novel learning experiences that can change the course of our aging.

Ever heard the words neurogenesis and neuroplasticity? As you read on, keep those in mind.

But how do we define the problem of memory aging? How Does Aging Impact Memory? This information is from the Posit Science website.

“Beginning after age 30, three core trends begin to affect brain function. Over time, these have noticeable impacts on our memory, thinking, and focus. They include:

1. Speed: Slower processing Our brains gradually slow down—but the speed of information (sights and sounds happening in our life) coming in from the senses does not. Over time, the brain begins to miss details, making it more difficult to react.

2. Accuracy: “Fuzzier” processing Like the grooves of an old record, the brain’s neural pathways often get fuzzier, scratchier, or even distorted. When the brain records the static along with the important sensory information, memories are fuzzier.

3. Recording: Fewer neuromodulators The brain uses chemicals called neuromodulaters to determine what information is important to record and process. With each passing decade, our brains produce fewer neuromodulators.

Memory Aging Solutions?

About a year ago I came across a book by Norman Doidge,M.D., called The Brain That Changes Itself.

Doidge is and was documenting advances in knowledge about how the human brain functions and can be changed.

Two of the words he talked about were neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.

Neurogenesis means that the brain grows new neurons, not haphazardly, but every day, and I can keep those neurons and get them located to circuitry in need of replacement neurons if I challenge those new neurons with novel learning experiences.

Feel more hopeful about your memory aging?

Nobody knew that the human brain had the capacity to renew itself like this until about 10 years ago.

Neuroplasticity is a term that describes the human brain’s ability to rewire itself, within minutes sometimes when a learning experience happens.

The more rewiring going on, the better my memory is and the quicker I learn and store a new memory.

So it appears that the phrase ‘use it or lose it’ really applies here, as the brain, being an organ concerned with energy consumption (it uses the most fuel of any organ) and energy conservation (it pares neurons and circuits not in use)will keep or discard neurons based on their activity.

Doidge interviews Michael Merzenich,Ph.D. who is one of the co-creators of the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program, and one of the world’s leading neuroplasticity experts, and Merzenich’s ideas are fascinating.

To sum them up folks, we are not destined to a decline into Alzheimers Disease after all.

There are some things we can do to keep our aging memory apparatus sharp.

Prepare to work out your brain, just like you workout your bicep.

The Pillars of Brain Fitness

If you want an overview of the pillars of brain fitness, which describes the main areas of concern for aging memory and brain fitness, then I suggest you read this book, Brainfit for Life, which speaks to the impact that life style choices have on our brain.

The authors, Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan, and they want us to have this information for our own successful aging process.

The pillars of brain fitness are physical exercise, nutrition including omega 3 fatty acid, sleep, stress management, and novel learning experiences which might include using a computerized brain fitness program like the Posit Science program created by Dr. Merzenich.

In fact, the IMPACT study gives a whole new level of credibility to the Posit Science Program, as it tested the Posit Program on over 500 seniors.

Now lets get on with the particulars of brain fitness, and start with the most important thing we can do for brain fitness and aging memory, physical acitivity/exercise.

To maximize your neurogenesis and neuroplastic capacities, it will be necessary to…breath deep.

Preferrably while doing aerobic exercise.

There is good news if you are out of shape, or have not followed an exercise routine for awhile, you can get that deep breathing and extra blood flow to your brain by walking around the neighborhood, or making a couple of extra trips up and down the steps.

Evans and Burghardt call that increasing the level of physical activity, and it does not call for flinging around heavy barbells, or training for the Ironman Triathalon, although Jim Ward competed in the Ironman when he was 74, so some of us are working out hard.

So it is never to late to find a program to follow which enhances your deep breathing and your brain fitness at the same time.

Nutrition and Memory Aging

Evans and Burghardt do not recommend a diet plan, but they spend a great deal of time talking about the brain’s need for micro and macronutrients, and the importance of getting lots of antioxidants from vegetables and fruits into your diet.

They also talk about the significant role that omega 3 fatty acid plays in memory aging. It turns out that our neurons, including those new neurons born everyday, are sheathed in membranes composed of omega 3 fatty acid, and it has to be replaced or those membranes get brittle and neurons then do not talk clearly amongst themselves, making us lose our memories.

Memories are our identity by the way. The best source of omega 3 fatty acid is fish, but that my cause mercury poisoning concerns for you, so perhaps you will consider a properly processed supplement for your omega 3.

Stress, Sleep, and Memory Aging

Evans and Burghardt talk about the need to get appropriate sleep as part of our brain fitness and memory aging training.

They say that important memory consolidation and hormonal events happen during our sleep, and if we cut our sleep short, we do so at risk to our brain fitness.

Stress hormones are supposed to be present in our bodies when our lives are threatened, not when we read the newspaper, or look at the value of our retirement investments. Stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol actually kill those new neurons before they get locked in to an existing circuit.

If you have followed the brain fitness field, you are aware of the Sharp Brains blog, and its author Alvaro Fernandez, who recommends the Heartmath tool as the best stress reduction tool available.

Maybe it is your golf game, or your kids school test scores which bring the stress hormones? Heartmath will help with those too.

The next important consideration for your memory aging brain is the novel learning experience.

That kind of learning experience is the kind we experience when we learn a new language, or learn a new career, or learn a new instrument.

Unfortunately, more sudoko or crosswords, or new counseling books, in my case, do not fit the bill. The challenge has got to offer, according to the Posit Science folks, increasing levels of challenges and the opportunity for us to generate about 80% correct answers, which makes the computerized brain fitness programs a time efficient and economical alternative, if you are not going to learn how to play a saxophone at this stage of your life.

I have tried three of the commercially available programs and recommend all three, Lumosity, Mind Sparke Brain Fitness Pro, and the Posit Science Program.

The Posit Science program has been good for my word recall, Mind Sparke has developed my focus tremendously, and Lumosity is a great break kind of tool, available on my desk top for ten minutes of challenging brain brightening between chores.

I am going to continue to look for new research and development in this area, and I will pass it along.

Remember the theme song to the Roy Rogers show?

Happy Trails to you.

Health and Beauty Tips To Keep Your Body Youthful Looking!

By John Russell

Your body is your most important asset. Without a healthy body, you will not be able to enjoy your life. For this reason, you need to take care of your body. In these times when everybody is chasing a career, it’s easy to neglect caring for the body. However, it is never too late to make changes in your daily routine and seek ways to achieve a healthy lifestyle. All too often, people don’t realize that the proper maintenance of the body is the key to good health and beauty.

Taking control of your body will also lead to a more youthful appearance. There are many ways to achieve this. Trying to follow some health and beauty tips in the magazines is a great place to start. One of the best tips is to plan a regular exercise routine. The more you exercise, the healthier you will be. If you don’t really have the time for a full exercise routine, you should know that even the slightest physical movement can make a huge difference. For instance, you can choose to use the stairs instead of elevator. Even walking your dog or doing some gardening is some form of exercise. As far as possible, try to add some physical activities in your daily routine. This will keep your body in good shape and reduce the risk of illnesses or diseases.

A good exercise routine does not necessarily mean that you have to join an expensive gym. The most effective way is to set aside at least 30 minutes to perform some form of exercise to burn fat and tone your body. There are exercise DVDs and simple home equipment that you can use. After sometime, you will notice a change in your body and overall health.

Exercise also has an effect on your skin, giving it luster and glow. To maximize the effects of exercise, it’s best that you accompany it with a good healthy eating habit.

Eating healthy food and acquiring proper nutrition plays an important role when it comes to caring for your body. It is best to avoid junk food as well as foods that contain a high level of fat and oil. Healthy food lessens the risk of illness and other health issues. As a result, you will feel better as your energy increases. Regular consumption of healthy food helps to slow down the aging process.

If you want to reduce the process of aging, then it is best to abstain from smoking. Tobacco contains substances that can cause the skin to age. Perpetual smoking will make your skin look dull, thus, increasing your chances of developing wrinkles even if you are not in the stage yet. Quitting smoking has a lot of positive implications. It includes reducing risks of acquiring cancer, lung, and cardiovascular diseases.

Remember that taking care of body will bring positive results. By following good health and beauty tips, you are taking good care of your body. The end result is a healthier and younger body. Start by making changes today and you will feel the difference right away.

How to Visualize

Realizing your vision is not only possible, with these techniques it is non stoppable. Visualizing works. Start the process of visualizing what you want. Begin with the firm conviction that it will work. Don’t let fear and doubt creep into the process, hold firm to your vision. Believe it. It will come to pass.

Bo Bennett: “Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose.”

Let’s imagine you’ve just completed building a custom home on a beautiful lot. Now it’s time to put in the landscaping and decorate the interior. Imagine this custom home is your life. You’ve just created a blueprint for your life (house). You’re at the fun point in the process where you get to add the extras, the frills, the landscaping and the decorating that make your house your home. Often when people reach this point, they simply hire a decorator and a landscaper. They never experience the joy and fulfillment of visualizing, affirming and realizing the creative process for themselves. How sad.

It’s okay to hire the landscaper and the decorator to complete the work, but please give these professionals your ideas of what you want the finished product to look like. First you must visualize what would be pleasing to you.

Robert Collier: “See things as you would have them be instead of as they are.”

Go to a quiet place, close your eyes, and begin visualizing the yard: Where are the flowers? What color are they? Is there a waterfall? Are there stone pathways? Are there trellaces near the porch? Any shade trees? What do you see? See it all in vivid detail; as much us possible expand and stretch your visualization. The more detailed your visualization the more readily it will manifest in your life. You’ve created a blueprint for your life and now you are adding the fluff, the fun stuff. Can you see it?

The Keys to Perfecting Visualization:

1. Learn to see

Go somewhere where you will not be disturbed, get quiet by breathing deeply, close your eyes and bring up a visual picture of yourself. Where are you? What are you doing? What would you like to be doing? See yourself and your perfect surroundings. Visual in great detail, see specifically, don’t limit your visualization. Give your subconscious mind a vivid picture of how you want your life to be. Cherie Carter-Scott: “By Visualizing the impossible you begin to see the possible”

Start building a new idea in you mind. Hold the picture let it expand and grow. See it become a concrete form. Remember fantasies are dress rehearsals. Every thing that happens begins with imagination like a nudge from the super conscious mind.

2. Put the details in what you see

If you see the ocean, what color is it, are the waves rolling or crashing? Are you in the water or on the shore? Can you feel the ocean spray? Put in every bit of information that you can. Be specific and clear. Red flowers or pink? Deep green lawn or a lighter shade of green? Cyprus or Pine trees? Say to your subconscious mind, this is what I want. Your subconscious Genie will begin creating what you visualize. Jung: “Without this playing of fantasy, no creative work has ever yet come to birth, the debt we owe to the play of imagination is incalculable.”

3. See the finished product and believe in what you see.

To have the visualization manifest in your life it is imperative that you visualize the idea with crystal clarity. Really see what you want. Have a mental image so sharp that you can see it, feel it, taste it, hear it. The degree of intensity you give your subconscious mind will bring your visualization into your life faster.

Do not allow worry thoughts such as: How much will it cost? Do I know how to do this? Other fears Negative fear thoughts are mortal enemies of productive visualization. Your subconscious mind can not create if you’re sending it conflicting messages.

As soon as you have a this clear picture of how you want your life to be, when you know it is a possibility then and only then are you ready to affirm, make an action plan and move forth.

Through visualization you train your subconscious mind. Peak performers, champions mentally rehearse with visualization. Those that practice with visualization probably perform better than those who use steroids. Unknown: “People who soar are those who refuse to sit back and wish things were different.”

The secret keys to visualizing anything are:

1. Visualize in a quiet place, do not let doubts and negativity creep into your visualization.

2. Visualize in extreme detail. See even the smallest of details.

3. Visualize the completed scene. Then turn it over to the subconscious mind.

Purpose? Find Yours!

1208183_camera

I’m writing this on the veranda overlooking the grounds, lake and woodlands of my ‘away from it all’ place. I’m spending time reading, writing, reflecting… and getting up late. I miss breakfast time but it’s totally worth the joy of not needing to be up at any particular time!

And as I write, I’m remembering a recent telephone conversation with a colleague. We were discussing living our respective passions, what stirs us, what enthuses us, what pulls us forward whether we know it or not.

And these words seem paltry compared with the sensational inside YEEESSS! you feel when you’re on track with yourself and your purpose. There’s no vocabulary for this or the certain uncertainty which accompanies you when you tread a path you’ve never trod before… yet you know ‘this is it’!

Our conversation also reminded me of the many times I’ve said ‘NO!’ to that urging, that which captures my attention and tugs at me to follow the sign even if I don’t understand what it’s about or exactly where it’s going. The times when I’ve raised my eyes to heaven, and still do, yelling, “Haven’t I done enough already?!”

The answer is of course “No!”… Because my purpose unfolds and develops just as I unfold and develop as a person. The ways in which I can express my purpose change over time as I change and grow. So there’s always something else to be done… which is exciting!

It’s also more than just a bit flipping scary!

But when I think back to my earlier life when I stuck to the straight and narrow, did what was expected of me, behaved as I imagined I was supposed to behave… you know the rest! Although I was ‘living dead’, I was also in pain, a restlessness, a feeling and cognition that ‘there had to be more to life than this’. And of course there was and is.

So, if you sit very quietly with yourself you might just hear your own restlessness, your own inner ‘voice’ calling you to what floats your boat even if you don’t quite know what that is right now. What you’re most likely to do is to tell yourself it’s nonsense.

I remember when I wanted to do a degree my ex husband saying to me that I should have thought about that before I got married. And that’s one of the kind of excuses you can give yourself… that it’s too late, it’s not the right time as if there’s ever a right time! or who do you think you are to be different… or even “Who me?! I can’t do that.”

And even when you know your purpose and passion, you can still trick yourself by using the same old cruddy excuses. I know because I can still do that to myself sometimes!

However, the truth is following your passion, being successful at what you be-do, doesn’t necessarily mean you have to overthrow your current life at all… or if you want to that it has to be done in one almighty tumultuous crisis. Although of course that’s up to you!

What it does mean is you start living dangerously exactly from the point where you are in your life right now. You get a sense that there’s something for you to be-do in the world, however small or large that is. Whether that’s growing African Violets or nurturing your children or becoming the next Anita Roddick… or all three!

And despite the scariness, I promise you you’ll feel skin prickingly alive if you do… trusting the not-knowing and how little by little, if you don’t already know them, it’ll show you your passion and your way forward… for now!

Here are some questions to start juicing up your purpose and passion…

#1 What billboard attracts your attention and what message does it give you?

#2 What subjects did you love at school… even if you didn’t pursue them?

#3 What are you doing when you feel most alive and enthusiastic?

Look for the theme or themes running through your answers and you’re right on track for uncovering your own purpose and passion!

Self Esteem – Celebrating The Most Important Person In Your Life

1204662_teapot_teabags_and_rosesToo often we overlook this person as not being special enough or worthy enough to take notice of and celebrating. The truth is however, there is no more important person in your life. This person is the only one that has always been there in good times and in bad.

This person is responsible for an immense amount of good in your life and the lives of others. The person I am referring to is you. The sound of your conscious mind right now denying what I have just written is deafening. Your conscious mind is speaking from a place of fear. A fear of how truly great you are and can be.

There is another voice however that is not afraid. On the contrary, this voice recognizes the greatness within you, and fully supports you in expressing your true self. This voice speaks from a place of unconditional love. It is very easy to distinguish this voice from that of your conscious mind.

The challenge however is that these voices are on separate channels. For many people they have been listening only to the channel of their conscious mind, not even aware that they had a choice to listen to another channel.

You have a choice. I encourage you to listen to the voice that speaks to you from a place of love. This voice is always ready willing and able to celebrate every step you take on your journey through life.

And you have a lot to celebrate. The only reason you might not think this is so is because your conscious mind tends to focus obsessively on the negative. You may have done a hundred or a thousand great things in your life, and your conscious mind still brings up that thing you did five, ten, maybe fifty years ago as an example of how you are not worthy of celebrating your life

If you were to take a piece of paper and write all the good things you have done for yourself and others on the right side, and all the things you judged as bad on the left, I think you would find that the list on the right would be significantly longer.

Regardless, the fact is that you are an amazing person who through good times and challenging times has always done the best you could in the given circumstances, and if you could have done better you would have, and for that you deserve to CELEBRATE!

Today and everyday instead of looking at what you have judged yourself as doing wrong, look for what you have done right and celebrate it. Look for what other people are doing right and join them in celebrating that.

As a culture we spend way to much time beating ourselves up and judging ourselves as “less than”, not “enough”, “not worthy” The truth is you are a divine being having a human experience in which imperfection (by perfect design)is part of the process and yet from the day you were born you had everything that you needed to create and to experience a life of perfect abundance, peace, joy, and love.

And even if that has yet to be your experience, the truth is right now in this moment, you still have everything you need to live the life you deserve and desire, and that is certainly worthy of celebrating.

By celebrating you encourage and give permission to your true self to step forward from out of the shadows and into the light to share yourself and your gifts with the world.

So come on the time is now to celebrate you, the most important person in your life!

Peace and Joy: The Next Twelve Commandments

1198419_abstractMany people honor the Ten Commandments and try to live by them. The belief is that a long, long time ago, God gifted us with these guidelines. In this more complex world, we can use twelve more to steer us in positive personal and global ways.

The following are my ideas for the next Twelve Commandments. To be consistent with the first ten, I started with “Thou Shalt.” However, if you have a problem with that, just read the rest of the sentence. Your hearts will probably resonate with these positive courses of action that help create peace and joy.

1. Thou Shalt Be Free to Be Thy Unique Self.

When we are being and expressing who we are, we feel happy and fulfilled. This means exploring our interests, desires, skills and talents and deciding what is right for us. Effective parents help us have high self-esteem, inspire us to be who we are and then support us to live our unique lives, just like mother birds encourage their babies to fly from the nest when they can.

2. Thou Shalt Speak Thy Truth In A Loving Way.

It is more important how we say something than what we say. When we begin our communication with “I” we take responsibility for what we are saying. Speaking from our hearts with kind words is very powerful, because people can hear us and feel good about what we are saying.

3. Thou Shalt Focus On Being Kind and Loving.

Positive words and actions are contagious. Be the person you want others to be. If you want your partner, children and others to be kind and loving then act that way with them.

4. Thou Shalt Allow Thyself Abundance and Share.

Prosperity is your birthright and you deserve abundance. There is a belief that the more you give, the more you receive. It also feels so good to give to others unconditionally.

5. Thou Shalt Forgive Thyself and Others.

Revenge and holding grudges will hurt you. Accept that we are all human beings, hopefully learning from our mistakes. It is very healing to forgive others and yourself.

6. Thou Shalt Seek Win-Win Solutions.

If both parties are not okay with the solution, then, it will not be effective. No one likes to lose. It is best if all parties involved feel heard, considered and okay with the decisions.

7. Thou Shalt Respect All People’s Beliefs.

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. When we honor them, we have more peace and harmony. Be open to accept other people’s opinions. You do not have to understand everyone’s beliefs, but it is important to respect them.

8. Thou Shalt Accept Everyone As Global Family.

We are all human and have the same basic emotional and physical needs. When we accept everyone as our brothers and sisters, we will live in a wonderful, peaceful world.

9. Thou Shalt Honor and Take Care of Mother Earth.

Planet Earth is our home. If we devastate it, we will also destroy ourselves. To truly live a healthy life, we need a healthy earth that is kept clean and considered in everything we do.

10. Thou Shalt Balance Thy Life Between Work and Play.

In order to be healthy and happy, we need to balance our lives. We are actually even more effective and efficient when we take the time to play and rejuvenate.

11. Thou Shalt Be Healthy, Happy and Fulfilled.

We are not here to struggle and suffer. It takes healthy, happy people to make a healthy, happy family, neighborhood, city, state, country and world.

12. Thou Shalt Live in Love, Joy, Peace and Harmony.

I believe that our God Beings, whoever and whatever that is for us, wants us to live in love, joy, peace and harmony. We are a microcosm for the macrocosm of the world. If we all choose to live this way, we will create a loving, peaceful world.

Living from the 22 commandments can help us all live better lives and enjoy peace on earth. Each one of us has the power to make a difference. These guidelines can help you create the joyful life and world you desire. Go for it!

How to Dismiss the Fun Police

1166638_ladies_sunglassesMore About Fun Police!

I got to thinking a bit more about Fun Police — and something interesting happened.

When I open that door, it’s like opening the flood gates of a dam. Seriously!

There are so many thoughts about fun, and about Fun Police in my mind, I have to rein it all in.

I recently wrote about the fun police called “Not Fast Enough”. The response to that article has been overwhelming. I guess lots of people struggle with that one. And you don’t have to look very far to find those people. Just try sitting in a traffic jam, or standing in line at the Post Office for a few minutes. You’ll recognize them by their toe-tapping, sighing, and frantic looks of frustration.

For those of you who don’t know about Fun Police, these are the voices in your head that stop you from experiencing all the joy that life can bring. They torment you, and make you miserable. Not Fast Enough is just one of those.

But there are so many other Fun Police; it’s not fair to talk about one and not the others.

So let me introduce you to one of my favorites — and it’s one many of my coaching clients struggle with. It’s called “Who do you think you are?”

This one shows up in your choices to do for someone else instead of yourself. This one is the biggest cause of guilt that I know.

Whenever you think about having that second slice of cake, or another glass of wine; or when you ask everyone to go away and leave you alone; or when you hope that someone will just come and whisk the kids away so you can have a couple of hours to yourself. Behind all the guilt is the notion that you really have your nerve taking this time for yourself instead of doing what ‘they’ want!

But it shows up other places as well.

Like when you think you’d like to get a new car — yours has pretty much run out of steam, the transmission has been fixed 3 times already and still jerks when it changes gears, the key gets stuck in the ignition and sometimes the wheels jam, and it’s really hard on gas. But you don’t even mention it to your husband because you’re sure he will have a fit!

Sure you know money is tight, and you are trying to get out of debt right now, but honestly, “Who do you think you are” asking for a new car?

Your husband may not even say those words but you won’t likely ever know that, because you are afraid to ask. Instead, you just grumble to yourself every time the key gets stuck or the transmission lurches you forward. And you find yourself not taking care of the car, not cleaning it regularly, allowing the kids to throw their garbage on the floor. That’s not fun!

And then you feel guilty and ashamed.

Because when you have to give someone a lift home, they can see what a mess your car is. And even though you suspect other people’s cars look the same, you feel like a schmuck.

How fun is that?

I knew a lady once who wouldn’t go get the brakes fixed on her car because her husband had convinced her she couldn’t make those kind of decisions without his input. Only she had been driving an unsafe vehicle for months and had convinced herself that he wouldn’t take the car in for repair, they couldn’t afford it, etc.

That’s when I stepped in. I coached her around the notion of making good decisions based on what she really needed — and not based on some notion of “Who do you think you are?”

There are loads of other Fun Police – those crazy notions that keep you from being all you can be, having all you can have, doing all you can do. I’m on a mission to show them up for what they are – just crazy mixed-up notions. Watch for other articles on this topic.
