As I look back I now understand how many hardships I did not have to face if I had taken my parents advice; now I will help my children break this cycle and capitalize on all this valuable insight.

Perhaps your parents had limitations which you do not have. Perhaps they made mistakes in their lives. Whatever your parents’ younger years consisted of, it is likely that they want better for you.

If your parents made mistakes when they were younger, they have probably learned a number of valuable lessons from those mistakes. They learned that mistakes do come with consequences. Some of those consequences can take many years to overcome, and some cannot be overcome at all. They also learned that avoiding mistakes is much better than dealing with the consequences and the resulting hardships.

You can learn from your parents’ mistakes regardless of your age. They have had years of experience in learning what works and what does not. They have learned which courses-of-action leads to hardships, and which ones lead to success. Whether they learned this from making errors, or from limitations which they had in their lives, your parents want a better, brighter, and more successful life for you.

When your parents guide you, they are trying to help you to avoid making the mistakes that they made. They are helping you to avoid unnecessary hardships, and take the course-of-action which will result in success. When you leave yourself open to their guidance, you will have a better chance and more opportunities than your parents had in their own lives.

You must always keep in mind that your parents always want what is best for you even if their guidance tends to come off a bit harsh, pushy, or very matter of fact at times. Just try to keep your emotions in check and remember to see their true hearts intent. They are honestly and truly just looking out for your best interest through tough love.

Instead of putting time and energy into overcoming mistakes, you can set your sights on your goals and focus on attaining them. You will see that you have more potential than you had realized. This is a wonderful gift which your parents want to give you, by guiding you in the right direction. All you need to do is accept it, in the spirit in which they are offering it to you.

Choosing to follow your parents’ guidance will break the cycle. You, and the children that you may have someday, will not have to endure the same hardships which your parents experienced. When you listen to and follow their guidance, you will be more equipped for success. Not only will this make your own future much brighter, but you will also be setting a good example for your children and future generations.

When I was in Las Vegas recently with my mastermind colleagues, we originally thought we were there to take our businesses to the “next level.” After all, isn’t that what mastermind groups are all about? Progress in your business! But, I soon began to notice something each time a colleague stood in front of the room to share… the realization of which leads me to third gift I received in Las Vegas.

Gift #3: The only “next level” is within YOU.

Colleague after colleague, each time someone stood in front of the room and started talking about where they were in their business, it became crystal clear that the only journey we were there to take was the journey within.

Many entrepreneurs (myself included) have made the mistake of thinking that business growth is something that you experience on the outside in terms of increased clients, more money, more web traffic, more referrals, more invitations to speak, more of whatever you desire in your business. And, yes, those things are all outward expressions of growth… but the only thing that SUSTAINS the external growth of a FULFILLING business is the internal growth of your soul.

Sustained, fulfilling growth does NOT come from what you DO in the external world; rather, it comes from the work you do on the inside. Sustained growth and the progress of your business’ evolution is less about the business than it is about YOU. As a conscious business owner, the only thing stopping you from all the success you desire is you, not your external circumstance.

Please forgive me if I’m coming on strong here, but I speak from my own experience. If you’ve been following me for any length of time, or have read my new book, you know that I have been through some very challenging times in my business… on the edge of bankruptcy and struggling to pay my rent. It wasn’t until I stopped TRYING to make my business work, (and started to INQUIRE WITHIN about where I needed to grow so that my business COULD grow)… that my business drastically changed for the better. So, now when I catch myself focused on the external aspects of my business, it’s a reminder for me that the growth isn’t going to occur “out there”, the growth is going to occur inside of me. Then, and only then, do I experience the results I desire on the outside.

So, the next time you find yourself wanting to get your business to the “next level”… it’s a sign that the time has come for you to go to the next level within yourself. Where do YOU need to go? What’s working? What’s not working? Why are you unfulfilled with the current state of your business? What would “light you up?” What old thoughts no longer serve you? It is this self-inquiry that leads you down the path to REAL, sustainable and fulfilling success.

To drift without knowing what it is you want and desire is death. To simply yearn for a better future will never bring it about. Though many realize this fundamental truth, they continue to drift along, hoping something will move them toward their dreams. Unfortunately it never happens.

The motivation to better your circumstances cannot come from an outside source, whether it comes from the end of a gun or the necessity to act to avoid losing your home. The only person who can motivate is you. The only person who can make life better is you. Fear and doubt are mind killers and squelch any desire you may have to reach your fondest dreams. But the fear to act, the fear of failure is in itself the final failure.

There are many who have abandoned hope, their youthful dreams shattered. Have your dreams become a memory? Or do you still long for some kind of redemption, an angel that will turn back the clock so you can start over again?

Face the truth. It’s not easy to make a self-assessment. In order to succeed in any stage of life you must:

1.Know what it is you really want.

2.Have a plan you can take steps every day to reach your goal.

3.See the ultimate goal, the big picture, and how it can impact your life.

4.Make improvements in the areas you lack. This calls for education and taking the time to learn. Experience is the best teacher and you can learn so much more simply by trying.

5.Stay motivated no matter what circumstances you find yourself in.

Getting motivated and staying that way means more than getting out of bed and driving to work. While you must be able to find those factors within you that gets you moving, your focus should be on what the results of what your motivated life will do to those around you. Your family, a friend in desperate need of help can give you that impetus to do something to relieve the problem. To be motivated requires you to set aside selfishness and take up an attitude of service to others.

The very purpose of life is to learn and grow. You can never entertain the thought that you have “made it” so you can relax and once again drift with the tide. You can only grow in the company of the world and its citizens. No one can learn anything without help or help someone else.

People exist to help and motivate one another. Conflicts will always arise, but it is the way you handle them that helps you learn. Thus your motivation should become the driving force that helps you and others.

Make it a point to uplift the spirits of those around you. In so doing you motivate yourself and make others want to help you reach your dreams.

Find your motivating force. Keep it foremost in your mind. See how it can benefit the ones you love most. Only then will you avoid the life of death that so many live today.
